Whenever the topic of heroin usage comes up I'm saddened. I don't know that it is what happened here. But I'm in my early 40's and mr oc is a bit older. In my generation there was alot of recreational drug abuse and for a chunk of time cocaine was the trendy thing. Nobody thought of it as harmful. However, everybody considered heroin as the worst drug you could do. Try it and you will probably be hooked and end up running your life to crap. I teach in two high schools full of affluent students. I have two 20yo sons. Their generation somehow missed that message. All the talks and lectures they received were about the horrible evils of marijuana. Even to adults those talks sounded full of bs. By linking mj with h they discounted both messages. My sons have had two friends go to rehab for heroin, both from loving upper middle class families. They also have one childhood friend who is rehab expecting to go to jail for the same problem. Young people just do not see the risk to heroin use and alot of them are paying for it now.
I don't know the answer to this, just stating facts.

For those of you capable of having a conversation without saying overly emotional responses . . .
I am a former medic in the United States Coast Guard who currently works on Nantucket, MA as a consultant for the USCG specializing in medical purchasing as well as new medical techniques learned through my office in Boston that researches a variety of different things - like addictive drugs (legal or otherwise). . .
Heath Ledger's autopsy came back inconclusive. This is bad news for his family because it was reported that Mr. Ledger had pneumonia. He did not. The autopsy would have found it. The fact that six pill bottles (sleeping to anxiety related) were found near him as well as the maid who found him did not call 911 first . . . she called an indivdual who was present at the scene of death before the police (who found a rolled up 20 dollar bill which, to me, means nothing) speaks volumes. A 28 year old male taking anxiety and sleep medication with a history of Class A substance abuse is a case people see in the medical field daily. You all care about it and try to start threads with the intent of a bunch of "sail ons" because Ledger was famous. There is a track record here and people on the scene before the police . . . with six pill bottles around the body . . . god bless his child.

Late afternoon reports on Chicago radio have said--- No traces of anything ILLEGAL on the rolled up bill. But they did add that he was found curled up and naked at the foot of his bed.

Scary, they say Ambien may have been involved. I take Ambien often and occasionally I will take a few extra to help me get to sleep faster. If you take one in a half or two it sort of puts you into a dream sequence before going to sleep....but I think I am going to reconsider doing that anymore.

My wording was too harsh, I shouldn't have said finally said something right. I should have said, he has the guts to scold the news people for carrying such nonsense. The excuse it's what the people want is horsecrap. I'll stick with PBS Newshour or World News Tonight. I should listen to NPR more often.

"Mr. Heath Ledger died as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine," medical examiner's spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said in a news release.
That's a LOT of medication to be taking at one time.

Exactly....some of those drugs are duplicate of others. If you go to multiple doctors and get prescriptions filled at multiple pharmacies, it's pretty easy to end up dead.

Or if one doctor wrote all those scrips....he needs to get his license yanked.
Most of those prescriptions have huge warning labels on them that say DO NOT TAKE WITH......
What a waste....

I have no medical training, obviously, or any scientific training of any kind for that matter, so this may be a stupid question. How can they say with any degree of certainty that it was an "accidental" overdose?

I don't think the medical people decide between accidental overdose, murder, and suicide. I think the cops look at supporting evidence and help with that decision. In this case, the condition of the body and the room were consistant with an accident.

Larry from what I understand. Most people who do the dutch
use only one type of pill. not a mix. (which is ever so much more of a sure thing)
when you take a pain killer your sense of time kind of alters.
and you don't remember so much when you took the last dose.
and being kind of "off" you are at risk of taking something
that you should not mix with what you have in your system..

Just a guess, but I'd think it was a case of no overwhelming amount of any one drug in his system. A deliberate OD would probably have resulted in a very high level of at least one drug, whereas an accidental OD would be more likely to show an average level of each drug, but lethal in combination.
What a shame.....

I listed to a little bit of Howard Stern today....Bubba the Love Sponge and it was interesting listening to them talk about the litany of drugs that they take on a regular basis.....seemed like it was nothing to pop five or six lunesta along with a couple of x anax or valium.........it's a weird culture......
They did say they were having some second thoughts after hearing their favorite "cocktail" described as cause of death.
