Nothing in Newport is cheap.... Our "summer people" drive Rolls Royces and Ferraris.... :o

Red Parrot is good. So is Brick Alley Pub. IMHO Brick Alley has the *best* martinis. Red Parrot has a huge menu and good conch fritters. If you want good key lime pie, go to KW, but in Newport, Brick Alley's is good. I don't like Red Parrot's key lime pie... too heavy....

Busker's, on Thame's St (in Newport the "Th" is soft, like "think") is a good Irish Pub.

Black Pearl has great clam chowder.

On Lower Thames (a longish walk or a cab ride), Shells and Scales is a great fish place. They don't take plastic, though, just cash. Zelda's, also on Lower Thames, is also good.

Coddington Brewing Company, a ten minute drive, has great microbrews and pub food. Prices are a bit lower than downtown because it's a local place rather than a tourist place.

Flo's Clam Shack at First Beach (5-7 minutes from the Hyatt) has great fried clams.

Keep your eyes peeled for Nicholas Cage. He lives here on the island now. I've never seen him, but others have.

A parking hint.... parking in the residential areas isn't restricted in the winter. If you can't find a place at the Hyatt, park in the neighborhood near the Viking and take the shuttle. Be careful about parking in a 2 or 3 hour limit area (the meters and most of the areas around the restaurants, but not usually the residential areas). They'll definitely ticket you for overstaying your 2 or 3 hours.
