School Question: Core Knowledge Program

I'm wondering how many parents/teachers out there have anything to say about core knowledge programs?

We're looking at switching Victoria from a private Catholic school to a core knowledge charter school in our area. It seems like a pretty straightforward, academic-focused curriculum based on standards of achievement. I get a really good vibe from the school and they offer a lot of what her school offers now (minus the God stuff), and more. Plus, it is a K-8 school which means we won't have to switch again until she's in HS and her brother would get sibling priority in two years when it is time for kindergarten. Oh yeah, and it's close to where we live.

She auditioned for a performing arts magnet school in Denver which she'll attend next year (thru 12th grade) if she gets in (we'll know in late February) but we needed a back-up plan in case that doesn't come to fruition.

As for why we're leaving the Catholic school system, well, it just doesn't match up to what Victoria's needs are as a student. The academics are there, but not the arts and that is a huge part of what Victoria is about. There is a large emphasis (and budget) for sports programs, but nothing for the arts. It will be sad for her to leave behind the religious learning as part of school, but she is very rooted in her faith and we'll make sure she gets all the God stuff she needs another way.

Anyway, any input on core knowledge is appreciated. :D

i DO know a lot about magnet schools. there are different types. some are GREAT and others do more harm than good.

I'm pretty sketchy/diligent when it comes to school research, especially for charter/magnet programs. I am very picky.

Either school she may attend next year has Excellent or High ratings on our statewide tests (which translate to NCLB funds). One is a magnet (the arts school) and one is a charter (core knowledge).

My BS meter is pretty good when it comes to schools. I'm not much for the lovey-dovey, no grades curriculums.

If the Arts magnet maintains good academics in it core(reading, riting, rithmitic :) ) , send her there, sounds like she's a very talented person and every opportunity to advance her acting skills is important. As long as she's interested in theatre and the performing arts, give her the best that's available, with a good basic educational backup for any other interests.

The arts magnet is definitely plan A, but since it is based on her audition (which she already did) it is out of our hands. Getting into certain schools can be rather competitive if it is not your home-area school so a good plan B needed to be in effect.

Her audition went really well and she is an outstanding performer and dedicated to the arts. However, when 150 kids audition for 15 spots, a plan B that is *almost* as goos as plan A helps all of us (ok, me) cope with the notion of disappointment.
