A developer is proposing a shortcut from New York to New England. It would be the world's longest highway tunnel running more than 16 miles under the west end on Long Island Sound.
Holy crap!
Estimated cost . . . 10 billion . . .
so if it is anything like the Big Dig in Boston the final cost would be about 40 billion . . . seriously.

Why not do something similar to the The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, 20 miles long with 2 mile long tunnels

Robert Moses wanted to build a bridge across LI Sound 40 years ago, they should have let him. That's why they built the Seafood Oyster Bed Expressway on LI, it was supposed to be the approach road for the LI side of the cross-Sound bridge.

The developer's name is Vincent Polimeni and according to the Boston Globe he will recoup his costs by charging 25 bucks each way and by selling advertising . . .
Estimated time of completion . . . 2025 . . .

It would be funny if it's one lane each direction.

Why not just pave right over the sound altogether? It's already treated like a sewer...

It sounds like one of those great ideas, but it would totally wreck the atmosphere of the North Fork and the Wine Country if they did something like that.
Then again, if they ran it through the Hamptons, I wouldn't mind!

He's big into tunnel construction, and he thinks the LI Sound is the most glorious body of water in the universe. Go Big Papi!
