Anyone been to Europe lately and used Eurorail for extensive travel? I'm thinking about doing this sometime after August of this year. Go to Spain for a couple of months folowed by at least a few weeks of travel throughout Europe. Any tips or advice?

I haven't checked in a while, but the prepaid Europass is the bomb if they still have it. We'd get on the train, staple it to our shirts, get drunk and pass out, and see where we woke up when I did jet ski shows over there back in the 90's.

yeah they do. Starts off at around $750 for 15 days of travel.

We took the high speed train through the chunnel London to Paris and back a couple years ago, and we also used BritRail extensively which works the same way; our nephew used the EuroRail a couple years ago... but pretty sure you have to buy it BEFORE you leave the US or Canada.

Remember that all the Europeans take THEIR vacations in the month of August, which means more crowded.

I went this summer and it was worth it. First class was great in France, England and Ireland. Not much different in Spain and Italy. Switzerland didn't accept it most places, but did give a discount. Oh yeah, England doesn't either unless going to France and Ireland. You can use the Eurorail to take the ferry to Ireland and it will include the train from London. Or at least, it did while I was there.

with the dollar continuing to go so low, I would suggest Central or South America, but if you can still do it in Europe, go for it.

I'd like to plan a similar itinerary through Europe,
but one thing that is putting my plan on hold is the terrible exchange rate of the Euro right now. It's really bad :-?
For example, eating dinner at a McDonald's in London will cost you about $25-30!!
Our weak dollar doesn't buy nearly what it did just FIVE years ago, so I'm going to wait out this down cycle and hope to do this trip five years from NOW when we should see a healthier exchange. 8)

I don't like the exchange rate either. Currently its roughly 1 euro =$1.48. I still will entertain doing the Spanish Immersion program in Spain and travel if other things fall in place. Otherwise I'll do it in Central/South America.

That's not too bad. It was $1.44 when I went this summer. However, England is ridiculous.
