Remembering mission commander Rick Husband, pilot Willie McCool and mission specialists Michael Anderson, Kalpana Chawla, David Brown, Laurel Clark and Ilan Ramon — Israel's first astronaut.
I can't believe it's been five years!

I know a NASA astronaut, he is now retired but flew 3 shuttle mission and did several space walks. I see him a few times a week. When he talks about Columbia anyone within earshot stops and listens. He knew everyone on that crew and some were real good friends. Very sad.
And if I remember correct that also happened on a Sunday, in the AM if I remember correct.

Did you know that Colonel Ilan Ramon was one of the Israeli pilots on the Israeli Air Force raid that destroyed the unfinished Iraqi nuclear reactor in 1981?

I believe it was Saturday, because we were getting ready to fly home to Texas from Mexico when we heard the news and we always leave on Saturdays.
A sad day.

Yep I was living in Dallas - had the TV on to one of the local news stations. They had various people scattered across the metroplex and it looked really odd - too many sparks kinda thing - going past the last reporter - then I heard the explosion. It shook my apartment windows and I could tell it came from the SE of Dallas. I ran out to the east side of the 3rd floor landing thinking I might see something but didn't. I then called my son and woke him and his dad up and told them to get up.
I was freaking floored.

same for me here. I grew up being in awe of the space program in the 60's and 70's. All those people in the program then and now are heroes every day. Thanks to those who have pushed the envelope, and to those who will in future.

It happened on a Saturday morning. I was driving to a rescheduled tournament basketball game when I heard the news. Blue skies, sunny, cold.
God Speed Columbia and her brave crew.
