Sail Grenadines

Looking for some info on the grenadines. We normally sail BVI but are thinking of going further south this year. How is the sailing? Are there plenty of anchorages? Provisioning? Is there some quality snorkeling there? I realize it isn't as crowed and as well protected as BVI. Just looking for a change of pace.

One of my friends just bought land and is going to build a house on Carriacou ( I cannot WAIT to visit!) PM me and I'll give you his email. He's a sailor as well.

Loved it. We took a boat out of St Vincent for 3 days. Went to Bequia, Mustique, and the Tobago Keys. Breathtakingly lovely! We were on a crewed boat and I don't know how to sail myself...but we seemed to find mooring bouys where we needed them.

One night in the Togabo Keys we were laying on deck looking at the stars and wondered if we liquidated everything how long we could stay on that boat. Reality intruded and we did come back home...but we'd do it again in a minute.

The sail was part of a "Sail Away Package" at Young Island.

Oh, and we took a trip on the Mandalay when Windjammer was alive and stopped at Carriacou. Was a really fun island!

Thanks for the input. I'm a little bored with BVI, its getting a little too crowded for my liking. I was concerned specifically about the sailing conditions and sleeping comfort. I could sleep through a hurricane, my wife complains. When she complains I don't enjoy myself as much.

These islands are definitely the road less traveled when compared to BVI.

The snorkeling was great. The places we anchored while on the Meteor were calm and no problems with sleeping. I imagine that changes depending on time of year/weather.

We had one really rough day on the Mandalay (Windjammer). (it was hurricane season) It was pretty interesting watching the supply boat try to stay alongside long enough to off load a ton of beer.

I bareboated through TMM out of St. Vincent for 10 days back in summer 1999. We too had been to BVI several times and wanted something new. The sailing is great. Good winds most of the time. You won't find all the established "yatchie" hang outs and variety of restaurants like the BVI but we had a great time. Bequai is like Roadtown in that there are plenty of restaurants and services, Union Island (very French - we loved it) comes close but the rest of the anchorages will offer only a couple of choices. Yes the snorkleing is great, esp. right in Young Island Cut. But by far the most memorable experience of my life was the time in the Tabago Keys - so unspoiled and gorgeous sunset and snorkeling. The people are very friendly and helpful. Mustique is a very wealthy island but the other islands have just humble islanders scratching out a living esp Mayreau and Canuon! We loved each of the experiences. I could go on and on. If you want more infor send me a PM. I want to go back someday.

You must go to the Grenadines! Why? Because Saltwhistle Bay on Mayreau is THE most beautiful place in the world, and you can only sail in. 'Nuf said!
