This sucks but I can understand. The rising cost of fuel that the airlines are purchasing (Jet fuel is a lot more expensive) and the added weight of excess baggage ends up costing a lot of money! The more weight in the aircraft the more fuel it takes to get to your destination. Then to top if off they aren't making that much right now but the cost of tickets are pretty low when you consider I can fly from Columbus Oh to Fort Lauderdale Fl round trip for $70. They need to do something but if they raised the price of tickets more then people wouldn't fly.

Does this make any sense to anyone other than me?

Yet.

I guess I'll just have to pay the extra for the guitar and write it off as a business expense...but in the short term, I ain't flyin' United no more.

This is silly. I bet they are attaching a surcharge so their base fare will show up as being low in the flight search. I am sick of these budget carriers. They have ruined air travel. If you can only afford bus fare then take the darn bus. There are too many airports that are now overcrowded. Lets get that supply/demand price curve out and set prices accordingly. And while you are at it, raise my ticket price $10 and give me a bag of peanuts with my soda and on flights over 2 hours give me a darn sandwich. I'm going postal next time I am on a flight and someone that should have been on the bus brings a bag of McDonalds stench on the plane.

They've gotta find some way to pay off that genius hi-tech baggage system they put in Denver.... and also to pay to take it out....

But here is my gripe..
If it is for a Fixed cost (IE fuel)
then raise the ticket price
but now we are going to have more people bring that second
"carry on" and tie up the line into the secure area..
also I already have one bag I must carry on..
my second bag of check in is most often gifts and goodies for the tailgate..

I think in the next five years or so there will be more consolidation in the airline industry and about ten years out traffic levels will drop dramatically because of fuel costs (ticket prices will go up significantly), so in a way the overburdening of the nation's air transport system will eventually be taken care of by shortages of fuel.

Airline travel will once again become the privilege of the well-off.

I think the preferred mode of travel fifteen to twenty years from now will be trains.

I LIKE trains. :)

From what I understand from the article, this charge would be only for a 2nd piece of checked luggage. I don't think this counts your carry-on.

I don't know about y'all, but I pack too much in one suitcase. How much clothes do ya need for a week at the beach? :o
If all travelers pack like my daughter, they're going to need to refuel in flight.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Pinot Noir in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO"

I have nothing against trains and hope your assessment is accurate. Unfortunately, our rail system is in such poor condition, I don't even want to think about the costs to refurbish that system.

I almost always pack one suitcase with clothes (including 'what it' outfits and clothes 'drama'). And the other one with toiletries. Sure I can pack ONE, but then they'd charge me for extra weight.

But there are those like Wayne who HAVE to have two.. one for 'normal' stuff AND his C-Pap machine. Would that not be charged for like a stroller??

I think ragtop's point (and the point I wanted to make) is that this may lead more people to carry that extra bag onto the plane instead of checking it resulting in longer security waits, and less room in the overhead bins and more people running into me with their carry-on luggage :o

I happen to appreciate to low fares very much since i live in Jersey and my family lives in Florida. I can afford to visit them several times a year. I should ride 30 hours on a bus because you can't stand the smell of McDonalds?!?

Good luck finding that woman in a short skirt with THAT attitude!

Spirit Airlines starting charging for the first two bags last summer, $5 if paid online and $10 at the airport. Those fees will be doubled later this month. $100 each for bags 3, 4 and 5.
