I don't think he has enough mainstream appeal, or even recognition, to be the halftime performer either.

if Aerosmith can make fools of themselves with Britney . . . and a guy who hasn't done much in years like Tom Petty can do it . . . why not a guy who sells out stadium after stadium for decades straight?
I think Jimmy would do just fine.

I dont' know about that. The more I think about it, he has much more recognition with a younger audience than Tom Petty. If you're going to use an older entertainer, ( and they use older entertainers,) he may not be too bad of a choice. I think his problem would be with the older generation that doesn't care for his stuff.

Maybe he could be the pre-show performance, like Paula Abdul this year.
And didn't he sing the Anthem at a Saints game the season before last?

I agree with Larry. Parrotheads aren't usually mainstream now are we? Why should our leader be mainstream?
I still have to explain just exactly who Jimmy Buffett is to so many people so it's not like EVERYONE knows who he is. And then the best you can do is say He's the Margaritaville dude, or the 5'O Clock Somewhere dude. A lot of people are still clueless.

As all right thinking people should. Right as in correct, not the political right.

The thing is...the people who have the Super Bowl tickets aren't the younger Generation.....Buffett may be popular with us....but how many people really know all or most his songs other than CIP and Margaritaville!!......i live in a town where i am probably the only Buffett fan or close to it..even the state as a whole there aren't many PH'S ..would i like to see him do the Half time show... sure....but again ...he may do a awesome job and others will like him and want to see a concert....then it would be harder to get tickets!!

please, this would be most excellent. He has at least enough mainstream hits to put together a superbowl show. And yes, I do think there's enough of a fan base when we're talking SYKBH. And it's Florida too.

Sadly, they've already started negotiations with Tears for Fears to do next years show
(Now I know 2 songs of theirs but even if I didn't know who Jimmy Buffett was I'd STILL know at LEAST three songs of his that made it into the mainstream.)

What four songs have broad enough appeal that the "TV Executives" would chose Jimmy?
not in any order
5 O'clock
Margaritaville
Southern Cross
OK, what THREE longer songs....

you would get...my guess... CIP , Come Monday anf he would end with Margaritaville!!...those are probably the most recognisable songs to non-buffett fans!!

these guys are still alive? WTF? one, maybe two whiney songs in their repetoire... that is gonna make a great show.
At least the last couple years with Prince and Petty, you had folks with depth of catalogue and performance presence. TfF, hmmmm. I'll be using halftime to do anything else.. with the sound turned off.

This year I watched the puppy bowl with the dogs, wife watched the game. I did watch Petty at halftime. I though he was one of the better half time shows in a long time. Prince was the best ever. I really wouldn't want to see buffett at 1/2 time.
besides he would play
5:00
cheeseburger
fins
and margaritaville

If Buffett played halftime of the Super Bowl, he'd do 3 or 4 songs. Guaranteed, it would be 3 or 4 songs people are always bitching about not wanting to hear because he plays them at every show. What would be the point?

Green day would be better. I'm not a huge fan, but if they play their "more popular" stuff, it would be a rocking good time.

I've actually been giving this a lot of thought. Yesterday and today, Mike & Mike on ESPN radio have been talking about who would be a good halftime show for the Super Bowl. I emailed them to say that Buffett would be a great choice, especially for a Florida Super Bowl. Jimmy's name hasn't even been brought up. M & M's criteria for a halftime performer is an older artist who has sold a ton of albums and has a broad appeal, especially to an older audience. Other names that they've suggested have been Springsteen, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Billy Joel & Elton John.
After hearing Petty start with "American Girl" (he usually closes his shows with that song), my guess is that Jimmy would start with Margaritaville, followed by CIP, 5:00, and Fins. We can hope, can't we?
Here's the link to email Mike & Mike if anyone wants to:
