Accepting he WILL play cover songs.....
I know that before this thread is half a page long, someone will post "I don't want to hear any covers." but the fact of the matter is he plays them, and they seem to fall into one of three categories: Ones that have become standards (BEG, Southern Cross), Ones that are special ("I Still Miss Someone" the year Johnny Cash died, a Steve Goodman tune while in/near Chicago) and Ones that are head-scratchers (Glory Days, Once In A Lifetime). So, let's pretend it's right before a concert, JB walks up to you and says "Hey, I want to play a song tonight I've never played before. What should it be?" What would you tell him and why?
My vote would be for "I Want To Learn A Love Song" by Harry Chapin. I think the two of them have a lot in common. Both are/were singer-songwriters whose songs focused on a story telling nature, both became successful through more grass roots, non-traditional means (Outside of Cats in the Cradle, I don't think Harry ever had a top 40 hit) and both are/were known for their philanthropic work. As for why I picked that particular song, as much as I like pretty much every Harry song, I felt like this one was the best fit. It's a song about a young man, fresh to the city, trying to make a living giving guitar lessons. he gets hired by a woman who's in a loveless marriage to teach her and her kids. Sure enough, one day, the husband isn't home, and you can guess the rest. Extra cool would be if he played it at Jones Beach, since Harry was a Long Islander.
That's mine. What's yours?

Take me for what I am, a star newly emerging.
I accept the new found man, and I set the twilight reeling.

I hate it when he covers other people covering him, like his Waylon Jennings cover of him singing "He Went to Paris"...
happy?

Popa Cubby's Sweet Goddess Of Love And Beer
Sunny Jim's Blame It On The Rum
Jackson Browne's Rock Me On The Water (I'm actually surprised he's never done this)
Uncle Kracker's Follow Me, it's the same song as Kenny Chesney's When The Sun Goes Down so he can cover Chesney without really covering Chesney
and since David Lee Roth did Tin Cup Chalice, how about Hot For Teacher?

Geez...anything of mine he wants to.
Seriously...Beatles...All You Need is Love. Any Bob Marley he hasn't gotten around to covering yet. "Moonlight Drive," an old Doors song.
I'm sure I can think of a few more...
