The restaurant industry as a whole is about to contract and weaker concepts like CiP will not be around. There are several factors shrinking the margins to the point that only the best run, strongest places can survive. The cost of oil is having a huge impact on the price of goods, especially when you factor in shipping. The right wing attack on immigration seems to be dying down but that would cripple the service industry further. Hourly wage laws, particularly in California, are also wreaking havoc with cash flow. For example, restaurants in San Francisco pay over $9 per hour for each waiter plus another $1+ per hour to the city for a local health tax. They are also required to have formal break periods and the employees get paid sick days if their roommate is out sick. With that plan, most waiters worth their salt can out earn most of the management team. Not to mention places like NYC requiring Trans Fat Free oil and calorie listings on menus which are expensive changes. All these additional costs are making it almost impossible to operate at a profit. As a liberal, I'm excited about these changes but the industry will be greatly changed.

In the last year in Hawaii, I've seen all the TGI Fridays, Jackie Chan's, and a Hooters close their doors. This has been a windfall of talent for my operation and we're, so far, lucky to be seeing a rise in sales. The shift to fast casual dining (think Chipolte or Noodles & Co.) concepts makes sense if you're opening a restaurant. Putting your stores in foreign markets like Dubai also makes a lot of sense right now.

I'm hungry now...
As an outsider I am suspecting you're correct... and it will get worse.

Has anybody else noticed chain restaurants closing down?
Two of our local Bennigan's have closed.

interesting... hopefully this is good news. but why would Mville want to buy a chain that's struggling?
according to the SEC filings, Mville has first dibs on buying the chain if they don't make their expansion plan numbers.

They could shut every Applebee's in the U.S. down and I wouldn't miss a lick. It's only good if you're coming home from a concert and don't feel like going to Krystal or Waffle House.

The only thing Applebee's is good for is 1/2 price appetizers after 10, which is perfect to finish off the night after going to see a movie, bowling, etc. with friends.

I suspect they're wrong. I suspect it because they try to hard to make it a political issue except for the cities that crazy people run.

I would argue that service is biggest reason yet there are restaurants I will no longer go to because the service is so slow and poor that I just won't stand for it yet these very restaurants have so much business, it is part of the reason the service is so bad, but other than myself the hordes continue to come. This causes me to think I don't really understand what makes a successfull restaurant.

Perhaps you just need a good location, adequate management, and a theme that motivates people to come to your restaurant and as long as you have that they will come in droves?

first dibs at leftovers... hmmm not a bad idea.

with gas predicted to go over $4 a gallon by the summer, I'm not going to have a lot of extra $$ to pay a higher price for dinner, the cost of which is increased to compensate for higher shipping charges from wholesalers.

"fast and casual" like Cowboy says-- going to be the way to go.

Now that WOULD be cool. Seriously, my first visit to a CIP was great and then the longer the chain was removed from Jimmy's direct influence, the worse it got.

On the other hand, I've NEVER had a bad experience at a Margaritaville Cafe. (Some of y'all probably have, but still...)

C'mon Jimmy, buy CIP back! :D

It would surprise me if Jimmy (through his main behind-the-scenes business guy - one of the brightest people I've ever met) opted to buy CiP. Don't get me wrong, it should have been that way years ago, but I doubt they want the headache. If it were larger, and a bigger brand more connected to Jimmy, perhaps, but not as a rescue/turnaround thing. Now I could see M'ville Holdings helping out a sensible buyer - if one surfaced. AF is correct - the contractual rights Jimmy has are complicated, and his interest is well protected, but he would certainly have the final say so on who gets to keep it going if Outback wants out.

Sad what's happened to it. They tried running it like Outback, but it never should have been looked at that way. Many problems, no willingness or ability to see what they really had. Hope it survives, but it doesn't look real good. Too bad.

Does anyone know if CIP bottles their own "island ale" ?? If so, is it available for purchase..? That beer is excellent. Probably one of my favorite reasons for eating there in the first place. well...that and the ambience....and of course Cheeseburgers (reasonably priced by the way).

Like the Huntington Beach phan, I agree we need Jimmy something in California.

Margaritaville San Diego in the Gaslamp, or Margaritaville Newport Beach with docks to pull up the boat (Jimmy, are you listening my friend?)

Other cool location options:

- Irvine Spectrum (near Irvine Meadows, Jimmy's fav west coast venue).
- Catalina Island/Avalon
- Dana Point Harbor
- Long Beach Marina

Just a thought......we promise to go often.

I may have to make a pilgrimage to the MD CIP this weekend for at least one last visit. I'm sure it's just a matter of time. :(

Anyone know the "fate" of the Exton, PA location..? I'd like to at least go one last time before anyone drops the guillotine on it.

OMG someone on this board from So. Cal. other than me. Hello SDPiirate! Hey, if you know Newport Beach, do you remember the Margaritaville restaurant and bar that was on PCH? It closed about 5 years ago, but I remember drinking beer there more than 25 years ago. After becoming a parrothead, I always wondered how they got away with using the name, unless they had named the place before Jimmy had copywrote the name. Anyone know when Jimmy registered for copywrite protection? By the way, I doubt Avalon would work for a place the size of his current Margaritavilles ...not enough trade year 'round, but when I was in Vegas last October he said his people were looking into him performing on the island this year (2008), so I'm crossing my feathers.

Ukulady....

Hello from San Clemente, just moved from San Diego. You are right of course, Avalon could not support year round. We will stick with Laui Larry's.

I have strayed into the old Margaritaville on PCH in Newport on many a Sunday. Even rented the place for company events. Alas, now a memory as you note. This was always a bootleg Margaritaville, just like the bootleg CIP in Lahaina Maui owned by two women who somehow worked it out with Jimmy.

Great rumor about Jimmy on Avalon! This would be a huge win/win. I have a 53' boat and make the Catalina run several times a year. Wow, this would be HUGE. Maybe it will be during the Jazz fest.

There are around a dozen or soBNer's in So Cal who post. Most of the guys are from San Diego and are all great folks. You can find me at the Jimmy shows pre-parties in a 45' gold/black tour bus with "FINS BUS" plates. The entourage and I are all friendly. We are also going to Eagles in Indo, Chesney in San Diego, Tom Petty in Irvine, etc. Stop by.

I know along with Ashville. Wonder if ALL CiPs will close down?
OSI is attempting to sell off the brand. In the meantime, they are shutting down some of the less profitable locations. Most are safe, but I'm sure a couple more will shut their doors before the sale.

We want to sell to someone who is interested in developing and expanding the brand, so the chain shouldn't die completely.

Avalon wasn't just a rumor, I heard it straight from the man.....me and 16,000 others at the concert so I'm hoping he wouldn't just say it if it wasn't a possibility. Won't that be great...our own Anguilla, just 26 miles away.....a 53' boat and a tour bus? I definately want to be your friend.lol

Stop by.

In a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you.
