Tax question
What are the possible reason's the State of NJ division of taxation would be requesting my Federal Tax Account Transcript, W-2s, 1099s along with copies of my children's Social Security cards?

Nothing good can possibly come from that request......
It's not some internet scam....right???

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Pinot Noir in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO"

Audit in your future? They may have noted an inconsistancy in one of your past returns where a typo could have been made. OR maybe those SS#'s appeared elsewhere, like some ID theft. Those illegals need to pick some random 9 digit number when they are hired, perhaps one of your kids numbers got picked.
Rub yours on me and I'll rub mine on you

As one who deals with Government auditors on a daily basis:
Give them exactly what they requested as quickly as possible.
Give them nothing more than they requested.
When talking to them; be pleasant, but give no unrequested information.
If they ask for documents or information you don't have; simply say you do not have it, do not make excuses.
Document each request, and all information provided and received.
Don't even think about lying to them, it's not worth it.

Re: Tax question
Something similar happened to me when I moved to VA. I only claimed a partial year resident of VA and they wanted the proof that I had filed in MA. I would contact NJ, but anything I mail to any taxing authority goes via certifeid mail. That way there is a trace on when you sent information. As someone already said, this is definitely a time to make sure you dot all the "i's" and cross all the "t's".thebeachbumm33 wrote:What are the possible reason's the State of NJ division of taxation would be requesting my Federal Tax Account Transcript, W-2s, 1099s along with copies of my children's Social Security cards?

As Shark said If you have an accountant/ tax preparer contact them first. One year my brother got a letter from the IRS stating that his return was being held up as they could not verify his disabled wife. Only problem was is that he was not married or ever had been. His tax preparer first checked his records to see if it was his fault, by entering an incorrect SS number, checking off married, etc. Everything on his end was fine. His preparer then sent a letter (certified and the whole bit) to the IRS stating he did not have a wife, disabled or otherwise. Within 2 or 3 days he received his refund and also got a letter apologizing for what had happened. Even though it was filed electronically his preparer figures that someone at the IRS office mixed up his return with someone else's.

If you have been divorced or your children have another legal parent, it's possible the other parent claimed the children as dependents in the same year as you did. Thus, this information could help in determining who the children lived with and SHOULD be able to legally claim the children as their dependent.
Now if the above scenario isn't the case...........THEN WHAT THE OTHER PHOLKS SAID ABOUT A POSSIBLE AUDIT!
Good Luck!!![coolup [smilie=coolup.gif]](./images/smilies/coolup.gif)

Hopefully it's something benign like my audit was. The IRS "summoned" me to their offices by mail. One official summons to me and one to my husband. In fact, I think I we even received mail prior to that stating that we would be receiving an official summons. We weren't asked to send anything though. We were told a time and date for the meeting and what forms to bring.
The woman I met with was super laid back and friendly. We ended up chit-chatting about family, etc.
As it turns out, I accidently reported my property taxes on the wrong line of my Schedule A, which caused a red flag. It was duly sorted out... I just had to refile an ammended form.
Having done my own taxes, I pretty much knew the ins and outs of my taxes and wasn't TOO nervous. Now I double check that I write numbers on the right lines. Guess I should e-file or use Turbo Tax, huh?
And oh yeah, my parents used to get audited all the time.... No Big Deal

Unfortunately it's more than likely an audit
My wife contacted her girlfriend who is the accountant for the restaurant she works for, apparently another waitress along with a bartender received the same letter. Fortunately they only want this year's for us, they wanted the last 3 for the other 2

ok this sucks. It is most likely a question of tip amounts. Do they keep a tip log at her work? I would get copies of it or the info from it. It should have the amount of her total checks for each night worked. This way you could make sure she was claiming a reasonable percentage, like 10 of her total checks for taxes. It seems to me that these things occur when one server at a restaurant claims a higher percentage of tips then everybody else does. Or one person got audited and they found that she was spending alot more money then she was claiming in tips and then they figure they should look at all the employees. I would definitely speak to an attorney because fi this is what they are questioning they can't prove that she didn't earn what was entered in the log and you need to decide how to reply to any questions they ask about it.
