Already cursing ebay for being so addictive.....or I'd have my air-fare already. OK, Friday comes and with it another paycheck, and with that another trip to TEXAS!!!!
HELL YEAH!!!
I think I can escape Thursday (24) but I'll need to be back evening of Monday (28 ).
Anyone else having problems typing this morning? Or is it only my hands that are shaking with excitement???

I think the tour should travel 100 miles or less around the Dallas region or it can start in Houston. Even if there is a show in Houston I don't think we need to do anything big- the city is very difficult to work with and they don't really want a world class tailgate.

Carl's Corner - Hillsboro, Texas - Carl's Corner - Dancing Frogs
Carl's Corner, Texas. I don't know who Carl is, but he seems like a nice fellow. As you travel south on Interstate 35 East from Dallas, you pass through this town. The welcome signs are quite weathered, but the best one is a big 18-wheeler, with Carl, I assume, at the wheel, his friendly smile and cowboy hat greeting travelers. After passing this sign, the traveler will pass a gas station with giant frogs on the roof. I think the frogs are dancing, perhaps playing musical instruments...? [Julie E., 01/07/1998]
[RA: Carl Cornelius owns that gas station as well. The frog sculpture is a creation of artist Bob "Daddy-O" Wade (also responsible for the long-gone Iguana that used to perch on the roof of NYC's Lone Star Cafe). It's an animated six piece orchestra of frogs.]
Dallas, Texas - Goff's Hamburgers
It is true that the owner is less than cordial to customers. He has always been that way and I don't think he means it personally. However, the Goff's #12 is the most decadently fabulous hamburger in the world -- very much worth not worrying about the owner's personality problems! I grew up in University Park, Dallas, eating Goff's hamburgers and just today I went by for the first time in probably 15 years and had a # 12. They are still the same! If you have never had one, you really owe it to yourself to experience the finest! [Kay Swenson, 01/04/2004]

Dallas, Texas - Lenin Statue
Right in the middle of Dallas suburbs, you'll find a very curious sight. In the middle of strip mall haven, in front of a small, unassuming burger shop, stands an actual surviving statue of Lenin. At the base of the statue there's a little plaque, engraved with the words "America Won".
Folks that clued us into this odd site told us go see the statue, but unless you feel like verbal abuse, skip the food. It seems the owner is notorious for being rude to customers. [Dorota, 09/10/2000]
Dallas, Texas - Giant Murals - art or ads?
This is worth stepping off the beaten path of I-35 or I-30 as you breeze through Dallas to cooler climates. This is a giant mural of a pudgy little kid pulling a wagon full of toy cars painted on the side of a building overlooking a parking lot. But wait... The little toy cars are the same size as real cars in real life! There is also another building-size mural of whales visible from this location.
The wagon mural was subject to some bizarre attention recently when wall-size murals promoting hit movies began appearing downtown. The Dallas City Council, in it's infinite wisdom, wanted to regulate this giant advertising, so they wanted to distinguished the "art" from the "ad". The rule of thumb? "Advertising" has words. "Art" does not. Think any fans of roadside attractions might disagree with the city council? [Mark Levine, 08/11/2001]
Dallas, Texas - Another Big Cow
It's at the corner of Northwest Highway and Lombardy, and visible from I-35. This particular giant cow sits on top of Pappas Bar-BQ. He probably stands between 7-9 feet tall on a pole atop the roof. Frankly, you'd think there'd be more of that sort of thing here in Dallas.... [Mark Levine, 09/16/2001]
Dallas, Texas - Cattle Drive Through Dallas
Native Texan Robert Temple Summers II was commissioned by the Dallas Trees and Parks Foundation in 1992 to sculpt three cowboys on horseback and 70 longhorn steers - each 130% of life-size. The bronze covers four acres in downtown Dallas, at Griffin and Young streets in front of the Convention Center. [Lori Cartwright, 12/24/2001]

This on is for Santa
Dallas, Texas - Year-round Santa Statue
This Santa Claus is standing outside of Marshal Moody's at 2910 Stemmons Freeway in Dallas, 100 ft. north of I-35 and 500 ft. from the Inwood Ave. Intersection. I think he's fairly new to the area; I go by there 2-3 times a year and just noticed him. The bottom edge of his coat is 8 feet off the ground -- I could barely jump up and touch it

Dallas, Texas - Chromosaurs
Zina reported the sculptures were sold to Ripley and that "John" may have loaned them to the Dallas Musuem of History for free...
The owner of the Chromosaurs, Dale Fortner, loaned the Sculptures to the museum free from 1998 to 2006, until he sold them to Ripley. The amount may have exceeded $200,000 for each sculpture.
The sculptures were loaned free of charge to the Motor Sports Hall of Fame Museum in Talladega, Alabama from 1995-1998 by Dale Fortner as a gift to former President of Talladega SuperSpeedway, Don Naman.
Dallas, Texas - Graves of Bonnie and Clyde
Bonnie Parker of Bonnie and Clyde fame is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery on Webbs Chapel Rd. in Dallas Tx
Greenville, Texas - Big Swordfish (Marlin)
Here's an update on the Big Swordfish (a.k.a. the big Marlin) on I-30 near Greenville, TX that went missing a while ago: it's back! The big sea horse is also still there but now they have several new friends. Multi-colored giraffes, a large baseball and baseball bat, some cows, a mermaid staute (I think) and lots of other stuff.
Irving, Texas - Giant Dr Pepper Cans
These giant soda cans are located behind the Dr. Pepper/7-Up bottling plant in Irving, Texas. You can easily see them from Spur 482, just a stone's throw from Texas Stadium, where the Dallas Cowboys play. I have not been inside this plant, and I don't know if they offer tours. I don't know what is really inside these tanks, either. But it's a cute gimmick and you can judge their huge size by the doors in the bottom of the wall.
Italy, Texas - World's Largest Caterpillar
Biggest I've ever seen -- 60 ft. wide, 350 ft. long, 22 ft. tall. Right on I-35, 45 miles south of Dallas, TX, exactly at Italy, , mile marker 386. Is seven domes merged together, formed by sprayed concrete over a balloon -- the national home of Monolithic Dome Industries

I think if we want to do the TTT correctly and start in Houston and work our way north we would have to leave Houston on Wednesday AM and arrive in Dallas Friday afternoon.sunseeker wrote:Ok...so should I fly into Dallas or into Houston....I wanna go to the pharm!!!!
it all depends on schedules and what you all want to do. If that is the plan I can start making the arrangements on this end but it is up to Y'all I am just the driver and tour guide
