We're going to try out the Krispy Kreme as a "staging area" on Thursday, and then we (Nicki and I) will talk to GBM and give a report so that he can get it posted-then you all can make the decision for Saturday.narnianelf wrote:You and me both. I've been reading these forums for a few weeks now anticipating the concert on Saturday at Toyota Park. What I am suprised to see is that no one has mentioned any concern about the location of this concert.
I mention this because the area of Bridgeview and Bedford Park can get pretty rough. As a life long citizen of the great city of Chicago, I can tell you anything around Archer and Cicero, 55th and Cicero, or 79th and Cicero is a shady area. A good deal of gang and drug activity goes on constantly. It is like the wild west down there. I used to ride with my friend who is a Chicago police officer in the area.
I hope I didn't dull the exictement for anyone, just looking out for fellow parrot heads. Just be safe, be aware of your surroundings at all times.
By the way, I hope no one is staying at the Skylark Motel. Look at the reviews!!!

I've been wondering the same thing. It doesn't dull the excitement at all though. I am just deciding if I should go on Thursday now.mdk77 wrote:I've been reading these forums for a few weeks now anticipating the concert on Saturday at Toyota Park. I should also mention that the entire area around Toyota PArk will be crawling with police so I don't think there will be an concern right around the venue. I would stay away from venturing too far from there though. In the end, I can't imagine the folks at Toyota Park would allow anything to go on right around there - it would be bad for business.parrotheadmike wrote:I've been wondering the same thing. Re: South Side of Chicago
The same thought crosses my mind every time I see a news story about murders in that part of Chicago. We stayed in that area 2 years ago with no problems. I think the same rules apply there as they do in any other big cities... don't go walking down dark allies and in strange neighborhoods alone in the middle night, etc. and you'll be fine.mdk77 wrote:I should also mention that the entire area around Toyota PArk will be crawling with police so I don't think there will be an concern right around the venue. I think we are going to be so freaky weird to them that they will be standing there scratching their heads for so long we'll be gone before they can get a round off.....

yea, don't pay any attention yet........
we're kinda still figuring.......
after Ellen's test run, and report I will get with Matt and we will post a definite time and place!!
Of course we do know that it will start at Hampton.

When the venue was first announced there was some discussion here about the area.
I think, as is true everywhere, and certainly in big cities, common sense is essential. For the most part, we will be in a group, and there will be 30,000 parrotheads heading to the venue. Both the town of Bridgeview and the venue seem really interested in making this work, so I suspect that some of the planning involved making sure the area is as safe as possible.
And I don't see a real need to worry about Thursday-you are headed there in daylight, and leaving with a large group. Keep your car doors locked, and be aware of what's around you and you will be fine!

While it's the first time Jimmy has played this venue, they've had other concerts and a lot of sporting events. I'm sure they've had some issues come up, but let's hope they've resolved them and are ready for us. After missing the beginning of the show last year at Tinley Park because of the long lines
, I'm just hoping they have enough ticket-takers and security people at the gates to get us inside in a reasonable amount of time.

I'm planning on camping over in the lot. Are you saying that may be an unwise decision?

Trust me when I say that the Toyota pholks are on top of this thing. I know this to be true. They're bending over backwards to make this thing go smoothly. The safety factor will be well in place as well. Between the Toyota staff & the Bridgeview PD....the want nothing negative to come out of this weekend.
One note of caution: They will be checking for tickets as you enter the lots. Tinley never did this. It is to discourage pholks that may just be coming to party. Remember, their lots are nowhere near the size of Tinley. Not sure that this is a wise thing, IMHO, but........

I've been a Chicagoan for longer than most on this thread have been alive, so yes, I do know the Jim Croce reference.
