If Jimmy sells out every concert in 10 minutes, why is LN wasting money on commercials? Hmmmm.

If there are commercials on TV, more people will know about the concert. Then after it sells out there will be more people to complain about not being able to get tickets.
Welllll...not every concert is selling out in 10 minutes...for the Frisco show, you can still get tickets at the back of the front floor section, and on the sides you can get them 3 sections from the stage...
I'm not surprised. I havent seen this one yet, but have been quite impressed at the amount of TV and print advertising Live Nation has been doing to promote the upcoming James Taylor tour. Perhaps we will see much more promotion for the Buffett tour than usual.
As to why, isnt Live Nation trying to take over from Ticketmaster or something like that? It may really be promoting itself to the talent and their managers......? Showing what they can do.....?

That was my first thought.
That question came up last year. I think someone said that the promoters are required to spend an X amount of dollars advertising each show. I'm sure it's written into each contract what the amount is. The tickets might be all gone, but radio ads still say Jimmy Buffett presented by Landshark Lager, Corona, whatever. So it's also a little plug for them, too.
P&T, the contract between TM and LiveNation expires at the end of this year.

So maybe they're promoting themselves in advance, to show what they will do......? Cant think of any other reason for spending all that money promoting Mr Buffett's sell-outs. And I'd be surprised if James Taylor needs it either....

Good question.
Similarly why does the government advertise in prime time when a new dollar bill comes out? Now I know some public service announcements are free, but the production and actors aren't.
Why does the National Guard and the Army spend millions of dollars in tax money to sponsor NASCAR cup cars?
Every day you wake up you get another chance to do it right.

The armed forces, like private industries do, have an advertising budget for recruiting. That money will be spent whether they sponsor a NASCAR or NHRA drag racing team team, have a 30 sec spot during the Super Bowl, or put up half a million billboards. The armed forces have found that sponsoring motor sports give them a big bang for their buck. At the races they set up a number of interactive displays like rock climbing walls. I went to a drag race one year right around Flag Day and the Army was handing out small American Flags, I still have them at my desk. At one event they can reach between 75k and 250k people, not to mention the number of people who watch on TV. Motor sports fans are also among the top, if not the most, brand loyal fans when it comes to supporting sponsors. I have read that the sponsorship deal are year to year so that they can review them to see if they are working.

Because, in general, the gov't is stupid and does not spend their money wisely...as opposed to private industry, which tends to make an attempt to earn a profit on their investment. I mean, we could take it to the next level and say "why does the gov't mint nickels and dimes when it costs more to make them than they are worth".
Instead lets look at facts: I just pulled up a pair for Frisco, a set at Alpine, a set on the floor at Toyota Park, and a single in Indy. This is unheard of in recent memory.
Thus, the ads in Philly.

The local spots were placed specifically for Philly by the promoter (Electric Factory I think). I agree, a promotional budget was probably negotiated as part of the deal.
I doubt he'll have trouble selling out one show at CBP on a Saturday, but the extra push doesn't hurt.
My biggest fear is that when I die, my wife will sell all my Buffett stuff for what I said I paid for it!
