The city of Boston has instituted a law that no more than four unrelated people can live in one apartment at a time.

Don't know if it still exists, but Evanston Illinois had that same law for many many years to try to prevent boarding houses. It made it difficult for groups of Northwestern students wanting to share an apartment.

I went to college in Boston and lived in many apartments in Boston...they will never be able to enforce this.

Probably. I would think that the city of Boston would tell the colleges to keep track of where their students live or get fined heavily.

Not possible...students don't tell college where they live....trust me..I've tried to track down enough of them..

Yea but you're underestimating the idiocy of the City Council of Boston.

Typical MA...
Don't like something, just make it illegal - problem solved.

I think this part will not pass muster however:

"The measure changes how the zoning code defines a family, to prevent five or more unrelated, full-time students from living together. Larger groups can live together, as long as they are not students."

I believe that goes directly against existing housing discrimination laws - which prohibit people from being treated differently.

Pholks.. We are having a lot of issues here with
"halfway houses" they promise one thing
(only one person in a bedroom)
(no one sleeping in the "den") ETC...

then they get caught with 8 felons in a 3 bedroom home..

(no felons)

this is becoming big business and is on a roll
as far as zoning and permits..

it sounds like your lawmakers might have your safety in mind..

It will never happen, I work at a college and when students live off-campus the college doesn't care where they live so long as they have a mailing address. What about the colleges that are just outside of Boston like Boston College which is actually in Newton but minutes away from the Brighton/Allston section of Boston where many BC students live. Or the colleges in Cambridge (Harvard and MIT), is Boston going to tell Newtron and Cambridge based colleges how to run their buisness? There are way too many colleges in the area, no way Boston will be able to pass a law that requires colleges to track where the students live off-campus.

The lease can say whatever it wants but you will have a fair share of places that have more than 4 students living in apartments in Boston.
