Time for new glasses...

Post by buffettbride »

I need to get new glasses soon, as mine have a yucky scratch on them.

I'm not a fan of contacts; have yet to find a pair that doesn't feel like sandpaper on my eyeballs, plus, I have an awful astygmatism which makes even torics a challenge. I'm also a few years away from getting LASIK. I'd probably be considered legally blind without my glasses as everything more than a few feet away is a blur. I even have one of those alarm clocks with huge numbers so I can see what time it is!

I want to be able to wear sunglasses, though, which I have never really been able to do. I was thinking about getting a pair of glasses with those nifty magnetic sunglass clips, but I am afraid of losing them. Hubby asked why I don't get the transitions style, but I really know nothing about them. I'd like to avoid having two pairs of glasses (sunglasses and regular). I tried that once and I had a difficult time switching from one pair to another.

Any opinions, thoughts, otherwise on the transitions glasses?

Transitions are great, Mal.. but they don't stay dark in your car. I love my magnetic clippy ones. :D

I'm a two pair girl -- Rx sunglasses, good ones, can't be beat.

Why don't they stay dark in your car? Not enough bright sunshine glare?

I drive from W to E every morning so sunshine glare is a big factor.

Maybe I just need to move to the other side of town!

I never go cheapie on my glasses, that's for sure. They are on my face all the time--they better be good.

Maybe I just need to spring for some really, really nice RX ones.

Hey Mal,
Since I wear contacts I just have regular sunglasses. I did have some of the clippy on style years ago, before the magnetic ones were available. They were really cute and I liked them a lot.

I had asked my eye doc about transitions for my regular glasses so I'd always have sunglasses available and they actually steered me away from them because they don't darken enough when you're driving. The tinted windshield apparently keeps them from darkening properly. Whether or not that is still true, I don't know...worth asking about though.

I need new glasses too...mine have a crack in the lens, not just a scratch.

I doubt they'd steer you away from them unless they really weren't that effective. They are HELLA expensive--and I'm sure profitable.

I have glasses and contacts. My glasses are the transitions and I hate them! They take too long to go dark when you're outside, then when you go inside they take way too long to clear up. In your car you have UV protection on the windshield so even though its bright as h*ll outside the glasses aren't getting enough UV to darken themselves, so they are no use to me. If you can get contacts and just a regular pair of sunglasses if not the get at least the clippy ons as you call them, but do not do transitions! IMO.

I'm going to be buying a separate pair of Rx ones this summer. I found some I like, but the wife thinks I look like a cheesy 70's cop in them, so I'll keep looking. :)

My dad had some of those with the magnetic thing at the temples that held the sunglass part over the actual glasses, they worked well enough.

I've thought about the transitions, but I can't get over the stigma that they were always worn by the geeks in school. Granted, I'm a bit of a geek, but I wasn't that geeky.

It was nice to have someone be honest about it...obviously not everyone is told that.

I had prescription Vuarnet sunglasses back in college. I left them on the table in a restaurant and remembered before I even got to the exit. Went back and they were gone, and it was clear that an employee had taken them since no one else was seated in our area, and it wasn't in an area anyone else would have to walk by. Of course management denied it. Joke was on the person who took them though...they were worthless to anyone but me.

Since the CHEAP sunglasses here cost upwards of $50-$70, why not spend a few more dollars and get the prescription ones.
They're the best, and remember, you get what you pay for.
And since we're talking about your eyes, being cheap is not an option, I.M.O.

I do contacts with "real" sungalsses ... have done this for over 25 years. 8)
BUT it sounds like you have "issues" with contacts. :(

SoulMate also tried to do the contact thing but had problems with astigmatism correction (and with Denver's dry air) so he abandoned that years ago.
He has has used all three other options - separate prescription sun glasses - the magnetic clippy things - and now he has transitions - which he loves EXCEPT for what was noted above - due to the window tint in most cars they do NOT (IHNSHO) get dark enough while driving.
Guess nothing is perfect :(

before i got contacts i had both glasses and rx sunglasses. i am notorious for loosing sunglasses and it got expensive replacing them.

now i love my contacts and the fact i can get cheap sunglasses that if i loose them, i'm not out an arm and a leg.

why not go ahead and get lasik? one of my coworkers had it a few years ago and they were able to go in a tweak it last month.
I must be wishing on someone else's star....

If you go with regular sunglasses I just had a very good experience with Smith. I had a pair of their polarized shades for over a year. Great lenses. The tortoise laminate started to peel, they asked me to send them in, and sent me a brand new pair. Customer service was fantastic.

The Denver air definitely has something to do with my hatred of contacts.

When I wore them in Mexico and Virginia I didn't have any problems because there was moisture in the air. I still didn't see as well with them, though, because of the astygmatism.

I definitely won't go the contacts route.

I'm leaning towards the clippy-ons or RX sunglasses.

that is the long-term solution but it's a couple years out because of $$. between all the MRSA medical bills from last year and the upper GI/endoscopy for victoria--we're still paying all that stuff off. :x :x

and hubby is getting the 'ol snip snip sometime this year, too. so it will be next year at the soonest for lasik. i'd LOVE to have it done!

I have glasses and rx sunglasses....it's time for new ones....both...UGH.

I haven't replaced the sunglasses for four years, so I'll probably do that first.
