Around Christmas I went out for a walk on my lunch hour. It was really crowded in midtown and most tourists haven't mastered the art of walking so it took a long time just to go a couple of blocks. I was getting so pi**ed off at people just stopping right in the middle of the sidewalk that when some guy said "Excuse me, do you know how to get to Central Park from here?" I said "Yes" and kept walking.

He didn't ask me how to get to Central Park, he asked me if I knew how to get there. I answered the question he asked.

I think Veeramuthu Kalimuthu (the hero in question) could have come up with a number of serviceable rationalizations as to why he shouldn't get involved:

The guy laying on the tracks is an inebriated bum and doesn't deserve my help, or

I might get electrocuted or hit by a train if I jump down there to pull him to safety, or

Surely the police will come and help him - that's their job.

Of course, whatever he was thinking, he didn't let it stop him from jumping down and saving the man's life, while those around him dialed their cellphones.

I think that's what separates real heroes from the rest of us.
