What is REAL funny (rather than just pathetic) is that there are still folks around who think Al Gore actually claimed that. Ah . . . the power of myth . . . :(

As for Gore....I'd vote for him over either of the choices fighting for the Democratic nomination.....in 2000 I didn't think he had the backbone for the job (seemed too wish-washy), but today I think he'd be a good choice and think he'd have won if he had run. This one we can agree on.
I was thinking about this thread last night, and thought if only Al Gore could suddenly announce his candidacy, he would win. He truly would be the only Presidential candidate with experience. He's the last person I would have voted for in 2000, because he could not at the time distance himself from Clinton, since he was the current VP. Bill Clinton cost him the presidency in 2000.

Now, I hear people suggesting he be considered a VP. If he were the presidential candidate and Obama the VP, it would truly be a dream team. What do y'all think?

Thanks, bits, for that Snopes item. I just read the whole thing, and it clears up the misconceptions that really did hurt him in 1999.

P.S. Again, flyboy, not a very current photo, unfortunately! (but then again, neither is mine. :-? )

You give Rove too much credit.

You're right, he never said invented, he created. Depsite the fact that the US military created the internet decades before he got into office as part of our national defense.

Hillary actually invented the internet while she was dodging sniper fire while rescuing a herd of baby goats from slaughter.

Well . . . it is all passing slowly into history and maybe it serves no purpose to debate it, but Karl Rove did manage to get you-know-who elected to the presidency (at least once). I don't like Rove's dirty style of politics and I obviously don't like the guy he propelled into the Oval Office, but you have to give credit where credit is due. It was an amazing feat, considering what he had to work with.

Pick any public figure, past or present, and I think Rove could have had many in this country convinced that said individual was secretly a baby-eating fiend, especially so in the case of Thomas Paine, a figure so clearly associated with the Enlightenment philosophy and values and what that meant.

But maybe you're right. Maybe Rove's best work was made possible by the gullibility of the voters themselves, and so he should share some of the credit with the electorate.

I think it has less to do with Rove and more to do with Bush's opponents. First there was the guy constantly reinventing himself. First the eye rolling debater, than the environmentalist canoing in the river that had just released water so he could canoe even though the farmers couldn't get a water release for their crops. The people just figured this guy didn't know who he was so why should they trust anything he says.

Secondly there was the guy who couldn't decide if he was in Cambodia on Christmas Eve or 60 miles away, and given that he was in charge that is a big issue. Then severe credibility issues were raised against him. Then the populace couldn't figure out if he was French, Irish or Jewish as he has claimed all three. Or if he was ashamed enough of his service to throw his medals away or was simply looking for a photo op so he threw his buddy's medals away.

This sort of material is easy fodder for even the greenest political adviser.

Rove is no more devious than the political adivisers on team Hillary. He just had so much more material to work with.

He almost lost Philly when he ordered his cheesesteak with swiss cheese. :)

His wife didn't get him many votes either.

He also screwed up when at a rally in SE Michigan he said "I'm so glad to be back here in Buckeye country. Go Bucks!"

One of his supporters tugged at his sleeve and said "You're in Michigan. Not Ohio" when Kerry couldn't figure out why people were booing him.

I agree the power of myth is compelling. A lot of dems have built Rove into this genius, blaming him and only him for the failings of the last two presidential elections. in short overestimating one opponent and necessarily underestimating the rest. To do this about anything is dangerous as it blinds you (general you, not specific) to other threats.
