Please buy Rice Chex!

Of all the things hardest for a sufferer of Celiac Disease to eat is breakfast cereal, because it is largely made of oats and wheat. Most rice cereals, like Rice Krispies, have malt flavoring added which is derived from barley. Another no, no.
Until now that was also the case for Rice Chex (and still is for Corn Chex). General Mills has begun producing, on a trial basis, gluten-free Rice Chex (without the malt flavoring). Outside of a cure, the biggest thing about Celiac Disease is awareness, so the more people who create a demand for these products make every-day living for Celiacs much, much easier.
Here are the details from General Mills: "Yes...Rice Chex is gluten free and it says it on the package. BUT it's only the 12.8 size box manufactured after Feb 1, 2008. There will be 3 check marks on the box. One of them stating gluten free. If sales go up on this cereal general mills will expand to other cereals."
Special gluten-free cereals are upwards of $4-$5 a box, for half the size you'd get if you buy a giant box of corn flakes. I get that cereal isn't exactly the healthiest of breakfasts, but it was quite an adjustment living almost completely without this morning staple. Most of the designated gluten-free stuff is pretty, um, barf, to put it kindly.
So, please please please please please buy a box (or more of this cereal). If you don't care to eat it, donate it to a food bank or something, or whip up some Chex Mix.

We love all kinds of Chex......I'll look for it at our store and I'll ask for it if it's not there. Our grocery store is great about labeling the shelves with "Gluten-Free" stickers and has a section by the health foods that is gluten-free.

Or make these - they are delicious!!!

Awww geez. I didn't do anything. Just watchin' out for my 'lil girl (who really isn't so little any more).
General Mills has always been pretty good about this stuff--labeling their ingredients. I had a thread about Dora Stars/Little Einsteins a few months ago, too. Those are both by GM. They've never actually gone as far to label their stuff gluten-free though, so this is a HUGE win.
The biggest misconception about gluten-free food is that it is part of a fad diet, when there are at least 1 in 133 Americans who cannot eat gluten for medical reasons (geez, I'm a freakin' commercial).

Well, I really should start eating breakfast on a regular basis, so why not kill two birds with one stone...

my kids LOVE Rice Chex. Believe it or not, they don't like the "sugary", basically junk food for breakfast cereal. I'll look for it!

Just came from the grocery store. BOUGHT IT!!!! My kids wanted cereal as their nighttime snack, that is what they had - they wanted two bowls, didn't even notice the difference with it being "gluten free".

Thanks, Don. You're the bestest.

I'll remind him to look for it. He grocery shops more, especially now that he gets off 4 hours before me.
