I like my job a lot (I like it SO much, I'm working 52 hours of overtime during this week alone- ), but I'd much rather be working it where I was working 20 years ago.

The job I currently have is basically an entry level position, it's tedious and sometimes boring, but when I am busy I enjoy the work. It helps that I work for an amazing company that is dedicated to the employees and that my boss is a good guy! (He's been to a bunch of JB concerts and we are trying to get together for the Cincy show, he has tickets I don't yet :( ) The company has paid for some new licensing for me so I can move up in the company and they are holding a position for me until I pass my test (which I take on Monday). So I really have nothing to complain about but my commute which is all my own doing!

I started where I am right out of college 11 years ago. Great company, great people. I am miserable now! Burnt out. Fried. Bored. I had a lot of success early in my career and we are a bit of a niche industry. I would have a very hard time finding another job in a different industry that I could make the money I have the potential to make here. We have a strict non-compete plus I have not seen a competitor that could offer me what I have here. Rock meet hard place.

Hmmm, OK my job doesn't sukk. The company is stable, benefits are good, pay is excellent .... so I got that going for me.
But .... (isn't there always a but) .... I've been doing what I do for a looooooooong time. I'm an applications developer and programmer - for many years I loved what I did. I still like it, just not as much and I figure within the next 2 or 3 years I'll have had enough thinking and will gravitate to something a little more satisfying to the soul.

I don't think it is hard to explain at all; you pretty much hit the nail on the head. IMHO, anyone who goes into a faith-based leadership role (priest, minister, rabbi etc) does so not for $ but for the love of God and their religion.

I've been working in the computer field for almost 17 years; about 15 of it has been doing systems architecture. (I help set up the computers systems that run various applications like email, web stuff, etc.)

Do I like what I do? Absolutely - there is always a problem to solve and something new to learn.
Do I like where I work? For the most part, yes. I have good days and bad days like most folks but the company is stable, the benefits are good and my boss is great.
Do I have a wife/kids/mortgage/debt? Yes/3/Yes/not much. Wouldn't change any of them. My wife works part time and has always said that if I want to change professions and do something else, she would support that decision and get a full-time job. But I like what I do.
Is this my calling? If I had my druthers, I'd be playing professional hockey or I'd be the announcer at the arena that tells you when there is 1 minute left in the period/game. But, 5-8 guys tend not to make the NHL and the announcer job is already taken. :) So, I'll stick with what I know.

Good point. Maybe I should say that people who go into those roles SHOULD not be doing it for $. I'm Jewish and we tend not to have too many of those folks so I sort of don't pay attention to them. If I wasn't Jewish, I'd probably be pi$$ed at the leaders of those mega-churches, but I digress. And I'm sure someone will prove me wrong in less than an hour and find some rabbi who is earning millions of dollars "rabbi-ing". My whole argument then falls apart and I will probably lose my religion. Thanks Jack. :) 8)

FYI:

There is a new thread on "Parrothead Social Area" called "BN Business Networking Thread". Check it out.

... Hoping it will be a regular on-going thread with the premise of fellow BNers helping one another.

I dislike my job to say the least. It is not something I ever pictured myself doing. I am starting to look around and figure out what career path I should choose. Its hard when the pay is good, I am getting more vacation time and I am used to a routine, but I need a change. I feel like I am wasting away only I am not in Margaritaville!

I used to work a tiki bar at the Galleon down in Key West. Was talking to a customer one day about how my inadvertent career path had taken me there. he looked out at the sunset, looked back at me and said "I think you got the best corner office in the world." :D
We won't be rich, don't worry about 401k's, IRA's, etc., 'cause tomorrow we might get hit by a Boar's Head cheese truck and all that we might have worried about wouldn't make shitforshinola difference anyway. We enjoy each day like it could be our last. :D :D
My 401k? The knowledge that there will always be a bar that needs a bartender.
Not to be a buzz kill because frankly I envy this attitude - but do you really want to be bartending/still working when you're 75?? I can only enjoy each day to the fullest knowing that subsequent days are being provided for in case that truck misses me! :D God when did I become such an adult, I even bought long term care insurance this year!
This could probably get me disbarred from the PH Nation!

Do I like my job? Yes I do......38 days until the end of school......I truly love the kids......38 days until the end of school.....one of the best nursing jobs I've had......38 days until the end of school...... :D

It could only be even better if I were the school nurse of a small catholic school within a 10 minute drive of a FL or SC beach...... :D

Did I mention 38 days until the end of school? 8)
