FAT CLUB 2008

A forum for those of us that want to lose weight and live an active and healthy lifestyle. A place to report in daily, weekly or hourly, whatever you need to stay on track. A place for encouagement without critisism, and friendly help without judgement. Sort of a MSC for those of us that want to get fit and feel better. Anyone can start the thread each day. Since I'm on the west coast, I will probably be posting later than a lot of you. Please remember to call it FAT CLUB and list the date in the title every morning. Thank you.

I will be reporting in daily, my diet (everything I eat) and my daily exercise.
Weekly, I will be reporting in my weight.
Monthly, I will be reporting in my measurements.

My name is Sally. I am married to Mike and we have 4 kids, 3 still at home. I am lucky enough to stay at home and do odd jobs here and there so I can buy Jimmy tickets and more ukuleles. I play ukulele for fun....7 days a week. I belong to a few ukulele groups. I have LOTS of enthusiasm for whatever I happen to be passionate about. My friends that know me best would say I'm the funniest person I know.

I joined Curves one year ago. I have lost 25 pounds. I want to lose 33 more. I currently weigh 183 pounds and am 5 foot 6 inches and I'm 47 years old. I will report my measurements next time they measure me at the gym.

Okay kids, I bared my soul.....who's gonna join me?

I'm 31, female 5'6ish and used to be a size 16, 155 lbs in my teens. I started weight training and got down to a size 6/8, 145 lbs. (muscle weighs more than fat, hence only actually losing 10 lbs. Go by how clothes fit, not necessarily a scale.) I've maintained that for about 15 years now. I eat healthy and workout regularly. I know how hard it is and I'm here if anyone needs me. I get bored easily and working out isn't my idea of a great time. In addition, I am completely uncoordinated.

I'm trying to get in better shape for summer and lose about 10-15 more lbs.

One thing I can tell you I have found is that pilates is the fastest way to see results. Usually within one week. Windsor pilates is the best I have found and the easiest to follow. It is hard as hell at first and you have to work up to being able to do a full workout. I did 1/4 of the workout one day, 1/2 the next, and so on until I could do the whole thing. The good part is it's alot of stretching and you really don't feel like you're working out. Hardly any sweating, but the next day you really feel it. There's a bunch on Ebay and again I can recommend the ones I've used if anyone is interested.

If you are doing cardio, you can do a fat burning workout for best results. A personal trainer told me this. Cardio doesn't have to be running. Elliptical, bicycle, etc. Obviously, only do what your body can handle. Start at a "light jog" speed, slightly faster than you would walk normally. Warm up for 3 minutes at that speed. Then two minutes at a "jog". Then "sprint" for 30 seconds. Go back down to "jog" for two. Repeat for entire workout, 2 min "jog", 30 sec "sprint", 2 min "jog", etc.

I posted this on the other thread but it is worth reposting. I just found out about it and all the stars swear by it:

YOGURT...

not the regular kind. You think it's healthy, not so much. Might as well be eating ice cream. Get GREEK YOGURT.

here's the facts:

Dannon Fruitblends strawberry: 170 cal, 1.5g fat, 33g carbs, 6g protein

Fage Greek 0% Yogurt: 80 cal, 0g fat, 6g carbs, 13g protein

add a little honey and it's awesome. I also add Grape-Nuts for a little crunch.

I'm with you. Last March, I weighed 240 pounds which put me in the obese category based on the BMI measurement. I'm now down to about 180/185 depending on the day and how much Easter candy remains in the house.

I started a program last March to get healty and eat better. I'm finding myself sliding a little these days on the eating part. So I can use your help and motivation.

This morning I ran 6 miles. For breakfast I had a fat free yogurt and Special K. (Better than the cold pizza I had for dinner last night.)

dessert ideas:

fresh or frozen fruit with fat free Cool Whip
Frozen fat free Cool Whip
a small piece of good chocolate (Dove makes little ones)
Haagen Daaz sorbets; lemon and mango are my fav

Don't try and go from eating your normal portion of dessert to nothing or just a teeny bit. Gradually cut back. Your body notices it less.

What a great idea. I weighed nearly 250 pounds in April of last year at the age of 33. Oh, I'm 6'4". I realized that for my health and for mywife and daughter I needed to drop at least 40 pounds. I got down to 207! Unfortunately, I've gained back 10 pounds. So, I'll jump in and goaloing as well. New goal is 200 pounds. Why 200? Because I know I'll gain back a few pouns. 205-210 is ideal.

Best advice I can give is read read read the damn labels on your food and no fast food. Drink flavored water. Use Splenda. And at least walk.

Today's starting weight 217.2.

Ok I'm in.

6'3", 235 lbs, will turn 38 in May. (Can't believe that last one. :o )

Athletic - blew my ACL 6 yrs. ago (had it fixed, but it ain't "factory"), but still play full court basketball, softball, golf.

Low-carb has been the only way I've ever been able to lose weight. I still watch carbs (somewhat) and that's the only thing keeping me from being HUGE.

Graduated HS at 190 lbs. and got back down to 199 a few years ago. If I could hover between 195-205, that would be ideal.

So... here we go! :D

Well....as long as we're soul baring....

I'm so in this with you guys....I've been fat most of my life....I won't even say the "o" word because I hate it....but it's been a harsh reality for me.

I've pretty much gone along with the attitude that I'm fat and happy....and I have been happy....but the reality is I am fat an unhealthy. I've been on HPB meds for six years, high cholestoral meds for three, and have been flirting with diabetes for the last two years......

On March 18th, I had lap band surgery. It's a restrictive procedure similar to gastric bypass without the malabsorption problems and must less invasive. I'm down 20 pounds since my first visit with the doc in Feb and I'm feeling really good.

I know there are a million different attitudes about weight loss surgery, and believe me, I've heard them all.....but this is what I feel I needed to do after battling all my life.

The beauty of the band is that it is a tool.....it reminds me (quite forcefully at times) to slow down....stop eating. It's an adventure in re-learning!

I've been hesitant to say anything.....because of some of the attitudes people have....but f*ck it....my body, my life!

I'm in with you guys though.....20 down.....70 to go!

We have Giant Food in Baltimore and one of them (in the nicer neighborhoods) carries it. Also any greek grocery store or Whole Foods or maybe Trader Joes. It's alot thicker and creamier and nicer than American yogurt. But it is plain, so def get a lil honey to add to it. This is the kind I get

http://www.fageusa.com/products.html

Also, I have terrible knees. The only way I can do any cardio (elliptical machine, forget running) is by doing pilates. I literally do just the leg exercises before I get on the elliptical. If I don't, I can just be walking normal and one of my knees will give out. Also check with your doctor and see if there are any special exercises you can do. There is one I do laying flat on my back with a big pilates ball between my lower legs. With straight legs, holding the ball, I lift my legs up and down. Sposed to do 20, I usually do about 10. This strengthens the muscles surrounding the knee cap (and works your abs too). I learned this in physical therapy when I saw an ortho about my knee.

We have an elliptical (a really nice one) in our house....along with a really nice weight machine. I've had knee issues for almost 30 years.....I had a ski accident in college. I also go to a chiropractor regularly and do excercises to strengthen my back and leg muscles and 50 abdominal crunches. I have pain when I work out 7 days a week.

And no, I haven't tried running in water. I have swam but my kids laugh cuase it takes me 20 minutes to swim a 500 and my keet do it in just very slightly over 5......

Thanks for the yogurt info.....we have a Giant right by my house and Trader Joe's and Whole Foods around too! it would be great for breakfast...I usually eat 2% cottage cheese and fruit or an egg white omlet with low fat cheese.

If Giant doesn't have it, ask if they'll order it for you. My mom has been "special ordering" for years.

Earlier today I was thinking of some of my lowlights from fat life.
They sound silly but they mattered to me.
My legs always rubbed together up top and hurt like hell.
I remember wrapping ace bandages around my legs so they would not rub.
I remember one time at a movie theater with stadium seating we sat in the top row. Just walking up the steps I was winded and it took minutes to get back to normal breathing. I was embarrasssed because I was sitting next to a stranger.
I drive forklifts and front end loaders at my job it it was a pain just getting up on them.
Here's the kicker.
One time I sat down in the tanning bed and cracked it and it pinched the heck out of my butt. My cheek was caught in it for a few seconds. Talk about pain!
Wait, here's the real kicker. My seven year old son told me that he did not want me to have a heart attack and die.
Those are just a few of the reality checks.

Just one of the great things about being fit now, I can throw it down waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than I have in years

That was when I was in the 280s. This morning I was 206.
I don't really need to lose much weight now but am trying to tighten up get more in shape with cardio and lifting. I'd be satisfied with 200.
I actually wrote a list of the things I hated about being fat when I chose to make a change. As you can probably tell, some of them were somewhat trivial.

Catch, I totally feel for your cause. I got married almost 2 years ago and in the moment I got engaged I set myself on a diet for the first time in my life. The problem is that I love to eat and my husband is a chef.

My strategy: Eat what I wanted, but in really small portions. I started eating only organic foods, and completely eliminated the words "partially hydrogentated" from my diet. I forced myself to only eat when I felt hungry and to stop when I didn't have that feeling anymore. I never denied myself anything, but limited myself to just a taste of sweets and other snacks I never missed a meal. Becuase i didn't deny myself anything, I never felt the need to splurge/cheat/binge.

Exercise was, of course, the other big part of my plan. I did yoga for 20 minutes first thing in the morning and then walked/jogged for 45 minutes in the evening 4/5 times a week.

The result: I lost 75 lbs. in 14 months, and have kept the weight off for almost 2 years. I still exercise and still eat what I want, but have stuck with the small portions.

There is a book out there called French Women Don't Get Fat that basically follows this same idea. I wish you all the best, and know that if I did it anyone can do it!

BTW, I got married in July too!

I have a quote on my fridge that I have been living by the last ten years or so.
It goes "You don't get up in the morning and think about whether or not you're going to brush your teeth. The same should be true of leading an active lifestyle. It should be part of the framework of your day."

I'm 51 years old and weigh less than I did when I was 21 and am in better shape. I bike, run and swim 6 days a week.

The key to losing or maintaining your weight is to be active. What ever your comfortable with to start and try to increase it slowly til you reach a point where you know you're really pushing yourself.
