Okay, riddle me this, Batman.
Is pregnancy considered a handicap?
Some politician with nothing better to do here in Cali decided to try to pass legislation that would consider pregnancy a "handicap" and therefore make every pregnant woman eligible for a handicap placard. WTF?
Sorry, but that frosts my buns. Pregnancy is NOT a handicap. Now there can be associated medical conditions that would certainly entitle one to a temporary placard, and that's fine. But to take away handicapped spots from those who truly need them just because you are a healthy woman with a bun in the oven is over the top. If a store or shopping center wants to offer preggo or family spaces in addition to the handicapped parking, great. But don't take away spaces from those who are legitimately handicapped. BTW, the legislation failed, thank God.
Here's my peeve with the parking situation at the mall near my folks. Front row is handicapped and restaurant parking. Next row is kind of a hodge podge of preggo/family parking and regular spaces. Then the next 3 rows are blocked off for VALET PARKING. Now more than half the normally available parking is gone due to new construction, so during busy shopping times everyone is fighting for any space available. There's been a lot of talk about safety. What about my safety as a single female? Dont' I have the same rights? My folks' house is apparently shielded in lead (or tin foil) so we can't get any kind of cell or wireless internet service there. If I desperately need to do something on the 'net, I need to go up to Borders. So now I'm schlepping my laptop thru the parking lot. Why on God's green earth should restaurant take out and valet parking spaces compromise MY safety? Mind you, no one uses the valet parking, so all those blocked off spaces are empty.

FYI, everyone needs to tone it down a bit....
You know....i can somewhat see what Carey means by her original post. I don't have kids...never will.....
I am bothered by the fact that my brother who at one time had NO working kidneys and has a heart condition could not get a handicap placard. he could barely walk ten feet without having to sit down...However there were multiple spots reserved for people with "children". You would see people parking there with 3 and 4 kids in their teens...all old enough to walk through a parking lot without holding their parents hands. Like anything else in society, it is bound to be abused.
And handicap spots are there for the handicapped and SHOULD NOT BE ABUSED.

Did your brother ask his doctor to fill out and sign the form for one? There's no reason why he shouldn't have gotten one.sunseeker wrote:FYI, everyone needs to tone it down a bit....

As a moderator, you should not tell people to tone it down because we are outraged at something that you somewhat agree with. That is showing a bias.

She's biased for doing her job? So it's okay to tell folks to tone it down on a thread about Jimmy or when jumping on a newbie, but not on a topic that is obviously controversial? I think not.carolinagirl wrote:Did your brother ask his doctor to fill out and sign the form for one? I was offended by several remarks on this thread. Some of us are childless NOT BY CHOICE. We still have opinions and the right to be heard. The high horse/holier than thou thing goes both ways.

I am not biased. I simply want people to not use curse words regardless if they use and astrisk in place of a letter or not. The debate itself does not bother me.

Eh. Tough cookies. A point needed to be made, and that most certainly made it. That was toned down compared to what should have been said.sunseeker wrote:

<<--- stepping gingerly onto my soapbox....
While I think carey24 is being too harsh about the existence of the family parking spaces, I also think some of the comments about her not wanting children are too harsh. I applaud people who recognize the fact that they don't want to raise children. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that and no one should ever feel the need to defend that decision, nor should they be ridiculed for it. There's nothing invalid about wanting to live one's life without raising a child.

I agree 100%. Pregnancy is NOT a handicap in and of itself. I can't imagine taking a handicapped spot from a truly handicapped person just because I'm pregnant. Ridiculous. I'm glad the measure failed.Brown Eyed Girl wrote:Okay, riddle me this, Batman.

Can I say "OH SNAP!" again? Or is it a one time per thread thing?carolinagirl wrote:Just one more thing... I applaud you for seeing your limitations and deciding not to have children. Children require more than anything else putting someone else's needs ahead of your own -- something your post indicates you are unable to do.

It's considered a disability for benefits purposes but not under the Americans With Disabilities Act because it's a temporary condition.FunkHouse9 wrote:I know women who are out of work after giving birth can qualify for disability pay. I don't have nor want children. Honestly I don't like nor have patience for children. Some people seem to think its unbelievable that I don't want kids and feel the way I do, like its my duty to have kids.
And yes I have thought about getting "snipped" but I haven't found a doctor that will since I am not married nor have children.

There has to be an instruction manual somewhere on the internet.Hoosier PH wrote:I don't have nor want children. Honestly I don't like nor have patience for children. Some people seem to think its unbelievable that I don't want kids and feel the way I do, like its my duty to have kids.
