Artificial palms purloined, tikis taken in Middle Twp. theft
(Published: Tuesday, April 22, 2008)
MIDDLE TOWNSHIP - Police are on the lookout for an artificial tropical paradise and the thieves who may be lounging underneath its plastic palm trees.
A surveillance camera captured a bizarre theft late Sunday night of artificial palm trees, including one 19 feet tall, as well as wooden tiki sculptures, from a retail pool store, township police said.
The Pool Zone on Route 47 in Green Creek had more than $4,000 worth of realistic-looking palm trees stolen from outside the store, according to Middle Township police.
One of the items is a hammock resting on two life-sized fake palm trees.
Police said suspects also damaged two security lights and two security cameras while stealing the items.
Police are reviewing a video from a surveillance camera and examining evidence left at the scene, police Capt. Scott Webster said.
The stolen items include:
• an 8-foot custom carved wooden multi-colored tiki;
• a 19-foot plastic green-and-brown palm tree;
• an 11-foot palm tree;
• a 9-foot palm tree;
• a wooden tiki bench;
• a hammock connected by two palm trees.
Police said the Pool Zone experienced a similar theft about two weeks ago when a large wooden tiki was stolen.
Dawn Shaw, a secretary at Pool Zone, said the items are very cumbersome.
"They're large and they're heavy. It was pretty much pre-planned," she said.
And they were part of a new line of items the store just recently started selling, she said.
The store had them bolted down on an outside display, she said.
"Whoever did this really knew what they were doing, because they came and knocked out our cameras, our lights," she said.
The trees are sold to commercial businesses such as motels as well as residential homes, she said.
Police said the thieves entered the property at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday and parked their vehicle north of the store off the side of Route 47.
Anyone with information about the theft can contact Middle Township police at 609-465- 8700 or Cape May County Crime Stoppers at 609-465-2800.
Patrolman Richard Sittineri and Detective Allan McClure are investigating.

Re: OK who's the gulty party???
I have heard that the police always withold information about the crime so that they can properly discern which people who come in and admit to the crime are jokers and which ones actually know something about it.OceanCityGirl wrote: Police said the thieves entered the property at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday and parked their vehicle north of the store off the side of Route 47.
In this case, I think that witholding the fact that the thieves were wearing grass skirts, coconut shell bras and leis was not the most cunning strategy.

They'll find this stuff. When's the Philly concert?

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Pinot Noir in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO"
