St. Louis Show - Awesome!

Post by Catch&Release »

I had a last minute opportunity to go to the St. Louis show. Pulled up a 13th row center seat 2 days before the show.

It was my first show since we were fortunate enough to go to the Anguilla show and it was one of the best shows I have seen yet.

The St. Louis crowd was really nice. People in the parking lot were very nice and the police did not enforce their threatened "no bottles" rule...Maybe because you can't get Landshark in cans, yet?

Jimmy was super fired up after an 8 year absence from St. Louis. The set list selection had some nice suprizes. I finally heard Cowboy in the Jungle live. YES!:D I'd also never heard Far Side of the World live and that was great as well.

Even WDWGDAS (which I usually HATE) was awesome. I think Jimmy threw it in the set list to amuse himself. There was a sign language translator in front of the stage translating for the hearing impaired. Jimmy was the only person onstage and walked over with an acoustic guitar. He said something like "I've been watching this nice lady do something that I think is very nice. Now I am going to see what she does to this..." He then belted out a great version of WDWGDAS while really emphasizing the word "Screw" to see how that would be signed. The sign translator was a good sport and put a heavy emphasis on that particular part of the song.

Nadirah got to sing 2 songs basically by herself, I think to highlight her upcoming CD.

Jake was with the band.

I also met a couple who also had gone to Anguilla and they had great stories. It was their 1st show sine Anguilla and they were also shocked to get a pair of great seats the day before the show.

The only song that I am not a big fan of is Rainy Day Woman. I am a HUGE Bob Dylan fan and hate that song. Jimmy doesn't add much to what I think is a boring song.

That was the only part of the show that I didn't enjoy. Otherwise it was an amazing show and a very fun night.

People were even nice in the parking lot on the way out. I think it was my 1st show that people actually took turns letting cars into traffic in the parking lot and didn't lose the happy PH vibe after the show ended.

Great show!

Thanks for sharing your comments about the show. Glad you enjoyed it and it always feels good to hear good things about parrotheads.

I also have to say while listening WDWGD on RM Jimmy's comments and singing with the signer gave us a good laugh in the setlist thread.

Funny comments! I also groaned when he started to hint at what song was coming but it was really funny.

Thank you for writing such an awesome review. I listened to the show on RM, but I was busy playing technical support person and getting my computer out of a crises, so I missed the best parts of the show. Reading your review is making me very excited about going to my first show in June. Detroit here I come!

I was at the show also, drove down from Illinois. It was a blast! The parking lot opened up a little after 2:00 and by then the rain had passed but it was still cool. Later the sun came out and the night was beautiful. Jimmy and the Reefers were as awesome as ever. The bit with the sign language lady was a riot, I believe it was just a spur of the moment thing. I liked that there wasn't an intermission like in all the shows I've been to before. Nadirah sang "Creola" and then Jake and Robert did "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", that was truly a highlight for me. The show just kept rolling for a little over 2 hours I think, it was great.

I have tickets for Indy and Alpine, now I'll just have to wait until July.

One of the best shows I've seen, and I've seen quite a few.

Think it has something to do with being energized by a vacation — his, that is. Jimmy and the band were energized but relaxed and genuinely seemed to be having fun. They were right on with the music, obviously the rehearsals had gone well. But on stage, Jimmy seemed a lot more spontaneous.

Love the set list with so many of the older songs. Can't remember him ever doing "Cowboy in the Jungle" live, either, and that was a highlight for me.

Didn't hear the Houston show, so if the "Where are the islands on my map" bit started there, I apologize. But it sure seemed as if he was just noticing it.

Utley's white shoes, circa 1970 ... Gawd, they were funny but awful — and from then on, he was "Mr. Michael White Shoes Utley." Sure didn't sound like a pat bit....

And then there was the signing lady. I suppose it might have been planned, but if so, they pulled it off. She seemed like a nice, good-natured lady whom you might see at a church concert; in fact, I was trying to remember whether she'd signed some of Peter Mayer's shows here — and she definitely was not in parrothead gear. Wondered later whether someone might have asked her whether she'd go along before he did it, but it sure felt spontaneous and unplanned — no band, just Jimmy. And yes, it was a hoot. Thousands of folks not only singing along to the song most of haven't missed at the shows, but by the end of the song, we were signing it, too.

Someone after the show said it seemed so fresh and energized. It was. I'd felt that a couple of years ago at the mini Landshark Lager introduction tour in Orlando. They'd been off for a while then, too.

Jimmy and the band just seemed to be glad to be back on stage, starting another summer..... If they can keep the feeling, it's going to be an awesome summer for the rest of us.

One tip: Plan ahead, the only one who got an intermission was Jimmy while the band and Nadirah performed. They were great, of course, so couldn't leave for a BR break....

Great review, coolcallie.

Wow, that wasn't very good planning for the band to get NO break.

In Houston the band got a break when Sonny Landreth and his band came on.

Didn't the band get a break when Jake and Robert did Guitar Gently Weeps...

We were there! And it WAS great!

Jimmy truly seemed to be having a good time up there. The map stuff, WDWGDAS, and the white shoes thing with Utley were all hilarious. Didn't seem scripted at all, but if it was they sure pulled it off.

Can't believe I finally heard Cowboy in the Jungle live... AND FSOTW live... and SBH live... and Miss You So Badly live...and Defying Gravity live... absolutely incredible.

We also got lucky with seats, too... weren't in front, but ended up sitting by two early 20-somethings that were attending with their parents. They'd been brought up on Jimmy's music, knew all the words, and really added to our evening. Fun kids. So... to the St. Louis Keets - THANKS! :D

Only downer was that part of the St. Louis crowd seemed to be a little... out of practice. Never seen that many people sitting down at various times throughout the show. Didn't seem to affect Jimmy, though.

All in all, great show, great time. :o :o :o

One more note... the intro to SOASOAS, about doing a show for the sailors on the USS Harry Truman, then showing a video of the visit during the song... wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. God bless our men and women in uniform. [smilie=coolup.gif]

My wife and I had lawn seats, bought the day prior for $20 each, and had a great view. JB was very funny and relaxed and sounded exactly as he does on his CD's. The lawn crowd were on their feet for the whole show, in my neck of the woods anyway, except for Nadirah and "My Guitar Gently Weeps." No troubles from the crowd and the drunks, if there were any around us, were quiet. The shirts were a little pricey but we bought a Margarittaville Tequila shirt anyway, I think we should have gotten a kick back for being walking billboards for JB, but ah well.

One of the best shows we've ever been to, the first JB for us...but not the last. :D

Oh, and now for the rest of my life I can tell people I sang A Pirate Looks at Forty with Jimmy Buffett. It may not seem like a big deal here but it's something I'll always treasure. Arrgh! :pirate:

...I hear ya! It would be cool if you could buy individual DVD of each show, so you could go back and watch the show sober the next night.

I hear you there. I am pretty fuzzy with most of the show. I will have to come up with a copy of the show on CD. Anyone have it that would like to share?
