anyone ever heard Jimmy at MSG?

Post by hrh313 »

i'm from NC and really love the outdoor theater shows way best. But i couldn't make Charlotte last night nor can i make the Raleigh show in June.

i will be in New York in mid-June and could work out going to the Madison Square Garden show on the 12th, but i'd have to make a special trip into the city to do so. With tix (good ones) at over $200 each (ridiculous), plus hotel and other expenses, I figure it'd cost me $800+ for my son and I to go to this show.

I've never been to MSG before. Question: is that a great place to see a concert, or not? I'm trying to justify the thought of spending that much $$ on one show. Unless it's a "not to be missed" experience, I likely will not try to rearrange my schedule to make it happen.

What a great set list last night in Charlotte. I listened to most of it on RM.

Went to last year's -not a big fan of seeing/hearing Jimmy at MSG definitely prefer Jones Beach -outdoor. Acustics not the greatest, no tailgating but I needed a Jimmy fix with no Jones Beach last year. I passed on this year with hopes of JB & my wish was granted. Mohegan Sun is better than MSG
Just my opinion

yep, the no tailgating beforehand definitely is a void in the total experience.

I haven't seen him there, I have seen many other shows there and they were all great, but I can't bring myself to go see him there unless someone gives me some tickets..lol

There's no tailgating but plenty of bars around to gather. Acoustics, that depends where you're sitting but are usually decent. We've seen a lot of other shows & it's always good. Here's a plus, Jake is playing w/them on the 12th. Hopefully he'll will do solo show while he's in town. That would be worth it by itself.

MSG's not my favorite place to see a concert but I can walk there from my office. If it's not a work day Penn Station is right underneath so it's an easy train ride from LI.

i think the acoustics at msg are good, but obviously not being outside is a serious drawback. not being able to tailgate is also bad, but there are plenty of good gin mills around there so it somewhat makes up for it.

Saw JB @ MSG last year. I have seen him at Jones Beach too, but I think the sound at MSG can't be beat. The acoustics there are great IMO. The only drawback, as mentioned before is being outside and tailgating. However you are in NYC and there are places to drink everywhere.

Its definitely a different experience then Jones Beach, but its just as fun!!

Did MSG 2 years ago, and while I thought JB's performance was very good- the whole entire package wasn't there for me. Too many corporate types who didn't have any fun, just had tickets through their companies who have MSG season packages, and while I had a blast at the BN party that day before the show, being in a bar is very, very different from the outdoor tailgate experience.

It's ok sound quality. I prefer seeing JB outdoors too.
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Life is short, live long!!

It's okay. The way I think of it is if you're someone that really loves to tailgate and loves tailgating more than the concert itself, skip it. If you go to shows more for the concert than the tailgate, then you'll have a good time. It's not Jones Beach but at least for me, it's only a train ride away, and it's a local show so I can't complain.

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

Same for me..jump on the train in Jersey, have couple of drinks on the way, meet up w/some bner's @ a local pub for a couple more, have a good time, walk(!?) downstairs & back on the train. Sound quality depends on where you're at.
I just pulled 13th row seats from Tm & now I have to go. C ya there. We'll make up for the tailgating in Philly :D :D We have our parking passes...

We saw Bubba at MSG last year and really had a good time. We started with lunch at the Fiest of San Genaro in Little Italy, and then bar hopped all afternoon until the concert that night.

Of course, the company we hung out with was exceptional, and we will be hard pressed to be as good hosts in Philly in a month.

But yeah, we liked MSG.

Madison Square Garden is a great place to see a show (don't know about those 400 level seats and some of those 300 level seats behind the stage are cramped and right below the roof) with great acoustics. However, the overall Parrothead experience (though it's a hoot to arrive by train and see the Parrotheads at the train stations-and at Penn Station) suffers a bit because there are no tailgates. I though the 9/11 benefit show as well as the Concert For New Orleans were great Jimmy performances. However in recent years Jimmy's played in September and the atmosphere (and crowd numbers) suffered-and I don't think the shows were as good or intense. For my money I prefer the outdoor shows and Atlantic City (though last year I spent most of the time gambling and eating rather than hang out at the bars which was a great experience for many). It was a great few minutes, though, when I took off my shoes and walked into in the ocean right before the show. Probably the best place I saw Jimmy was in Mansfield MA. Camden NJ is a dump and tough to get to but always has a great atmosphere. IN 2005 Philly was a great tailgate and very good atmosphere and I'll be back there this year knock on wood.

We saw him there last year and while I'd rather see him outdoors (such as at Jones Beach the year before) it is a Jimmy Buffett concert! We bought tickets this year too before they announced Jones Beach and we are also going to AC to see him in August so not room left in the budget for Jones Beach this year! I felt a little screwed the way they announced the venues and kept Jones Beach a guessing game till after I'd bought the MSG and AC tickets!

we've seen jimmy at msg a few times and although its still a great concert its not the same "experience." the only reason we got tickets for this years show is because of the whole jones beach situation.we also have tickets for great woods which in my opinion is still the best jimmy buffett experience.in years past we've gone to jones beach and within the same week right up to great woods.this year its kinda nice to go to msg early in june and then see him again in september.hopefully the setlists will vary to!
