I would have to put Lita Ford in the top 25 even though she was not a band

"The Best of Nelson" That CD must be a single!

If you move White Lion to the honorable mention list and replace it with the Scorpions, then switch the positions of Ratt and Def Leppard you've got my voteConchRepublican wrote:OK, here's the hair list from an '80's metal head. (from hair to thrash, to hard rock and all in between, I listened to it all!)
25 - Slaughter
24 - Black n Blue
23 - Skid Row
22 - Autograph
21 - Winger
20 - Quiet Riot
19 - Guns n Roses - they really weren't "hair", but make it for Sweet Child and Axl's hair from the Welcome to the Jungle video, a nod to glam
18 - David Lee Roth solo
17 - Tesla - another band not really "hair" but there's a glam/hard rock crossover which really makes "hair" and they are a good hard rock band
16 - Loverboy
15 - Night Ranger - were big right before hair really broke through
14 - Damn Yankees
13 - Twisted Sister
12 - KISS - For about 4 - 5 albums there they were VERY hair. Way too much neon and ribbons!!!!!
11 - Warrant
10 - Cinderella
9 - Def Leppard - Another band with a broader category than "hair"
8 - Whitesnake
7 - White Lion
6 - Poison
5 - Dokken
4 - Bon Jovi - added a little Springsteen (wannabe at least) to the writing
3 - RATT
2 - Motley Crue
1 - Van Halen - they created the template almost every hair band followed. Blistering guitar solos, great melodies, sing a long choruses, pretty lead singer.
Honorable mention - Hanoi Rocks, Nelson, Extreme, Europe, Vixen, Firehouse, Britney Fox, Frehley's Comet, Bullet Boys, Lita Ford, Trixter & Mr. Big
Here you go HM. Might be my favorite Warrant song!Hockey Mon wrote:Huh?FunkHouse9 wrote:I know a secret down at Uncle Tom's cabin oooooh yeeeahhhhh!!!!Hockey Mon wrote:Yeah, that is an interesting list. The only thing hair metal about GNR was the Welcome to the Jungle video. Unless I'm mistaken, there wasn't anything "hair" about Black Sabbath. Scorps aren't a hair metal band! They didn't even have any hair!!!!!! I do not remember that song at all, which is suprising. I guess I wasn't kidding when I said I purged that from my brain.FunkHouse9 wrote:Here you go HM. Interesting placement of the Scorps; I could see that placement.ConchRepublican wrote:Scorps aren't a hair metal band! They didn't even have any hair!!!!!! LOL
I usually put them in the Priest category, Metal, although a little more radio friendly at times. But their stuff fit in well with Living After Midnight and You've Got Another Thing Comin' I always thought.
You have to start with the Heavy Trinity:Hockey Mon wrote:Interesting placement of the Scorps; I could see that placement.ConchRepublican wrote:Scorps aren't a hair metal band! They didn't even have any hair!!!!!! LOL

So, if we had to rank 80's metal bands, who would you guys have? I would include: Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept, Anthrax, Metallica, Scorpions, Queensryche, The Cult (where they 80s?), AC/DC, Shabbath and Dio. I'm probably forgetting a bunch. I have no idea how'd I rank them.
In trying to classify a band as a rock band or a metal band, I use to see how many guitarists they had. One guitar, maybe metal; two guitarists, definitely metal.
I love Ratt.....but just think Dokken is a little better.ConchRepublican wrote:Scorps aren't a hair metal band! They didn't even have any hair!!!!!! RATT just doesn't get enough love . . . . RATT N ROLL!!!!!!!
As for White Lion, their two big albums, Pride and Big Game I always thought had great stuff for the time. Vito Bratta could flat out wail, and Wait may be one of the best songs of the genre, IMHO.

As for White Lion.....I grew up in Europe in the 70's, and Mike Tramp, lead singer of WL was the lead singer of a disco/Pop band called Mabel that my girlfriend used to listen to. So, when he came out with WL, it was hard for me to take them seriously, and I've always considered them wannabe's, kinda like Europe ( don't get me started on them...)
As for the Scorpions....I guess I can see them being metal rather than a hair band....I met the band at 2am in Memphis, back in '85 or '86....right outside Graceland.
I was stationed in Norfolk, Va and my buddy had to go home to Memphis for the weekend so we took off Friday evening and drove to Tenn. By the time we had stopped for dinner, pee breaks, beer breaks etc, we got into Memphis after midnight. We cruised around, him showing me the sights til he took me to Graceland. While we were sitting on the hood of his '68 Mercury Cougar convertible a tour bus pulled up. A bunch of guys got off the bus and stood at the gate talking. Then they started reading the graffiti on the walls and started getting closer to us. A guy comes over to bum a cigarette and I offer him a beer. Soon his buddies have joined him, and I notice I recognize one of them, Rudoph Schenker, and say to them "You're the Scorpions". They laugh and say yeah, that they had just done a show in Memphis. We were blown away. They had their beers, we made small talk and then they got on the bus and headed out. I kept the beer bottles that Schenker and Klaus Meine drank from for awhile, but lost them moving around. Ah the memories
I get that. Ah, the Motor City Madman...ConchRepublican wrote:After that, it's a free for all (pun intended for the Nugent fans) of these guys
It was a rough guideline used to delineate one group from another. I don't think anyone would be trying to figure out if Skynyrd was hair band/heavy metal/rock. That answer is pretty obvious. As for Pantera, I didn't know that. I never listened to them.ConchRepublican wrote:As for guitars . . . what does that make Skynyrd???? Also, Pantera has/had only one guitarist . . .

Not to mention Kix, Bang Tango and Y&T!MDown wrote:Let's not forget the lower "class":

Good to see these guys mentioned. I really dug them back in the day, and dont think they ever got the attention they deserved.ConchRepublican wrote:Honorable mention... Bullet Boys
