oh yes, i forgot about the deadheads.

but i like kenny chesney. i dig his sound. i grew up on country music & his music is different from all typical country singers out there because he does add that island sound to it. & his music is totally different from buffett's so there is no real reason to compare his musical talent to buffett's musical talent. it's the lifestyles & tailgating at shows that is "similar" but actually they are also very different.
i love kenny's shows. the energy is great. i was also at the show where he hurt his foot, & he got mad respect from me when he kept on playing. he's also a nice guy. i do like his music, though, too. anything that takes me to the beach is good for me. lol.

I honestly don't think the music industry or the public is comparing Chesnut to Jimmy, I believe it's all coming from Kenny himself. He's blatantly obvious about many of his copy-cat techniques, as the originality is lacking.

His nasal twang is easily confused with many other country artists, hence he needed a gimmick, an angle on his approach to set himself apart. Being a marketing major, he knew the same ol' canned country style wouldn't be enough, so he decided to turn into country-island boy.

Sadly he shouldn't have tried the marriage thing, however, too many skeletons were revealed from his closet which I'm sure he wanted to keep private.

But it is working for him... he is the first country musician to do a full-out stadium tour, & he sells out all his stadium shows. He's doing something right... so he is a very smart businessman. Mad respect. lol.

Very true, it is working for him, although I think what gets under most ParrotHead's skin is his adopted semi-tropical style and the comparisons to JB (hence the virtual Chinese stars being thrown at him on this board!)

In Friday's USA TODAY there's an article about "must see" concerts for this summer. Kenny Chesney is listed #1 and described as "this generation's Jimmy Buffett".........

At least they spelled Bubba's last name correctly..... :o

Think I'll stick to "my" generation! :pirate:

I saw that too. If it's in USA Today it must be true. We can close the thread now :P

Garth Brooks never had a full stadium tour.
He performed in stadiums, yes... but he never did a complete stadium tour.
Kenny is the first country star to accomplish this with his new Poets & Pirates tour.

It's an accomplishment to play a full tour in stadiums, where the sound generally S U C K S....? I'd call it a minus.....

Oh, and BTW..... all of KC's shows this year aren't in stadiums.....

Yea I fixed my quote cuz I just saw that he added regular venues. The tour originally was a stadium tour. The 13 dates for it were stadiums. Just not long ago he added regular venues.
But he does also have the help of Brooks & Dunn, too, for his stadium shows.

Your comments in my opinion are dead on.

With 100+ shows, I would say I love Jimmy Buffett's music, and tailgates. Maybe a bit too much after investing in two tour buses for tailgates, a ton of jet fees and plane tickets to see him. Sorry Hertz for using your SUV roof's as dance floors in other locales (at least I clean out the interiors).

That said, Jimmy will retire, and I will not. We plan on going to every KC show we can, with the next one 5/29 in San Diego. He is no Jimmy, but his shows are fun, and while I have a young very attractive wife, the girls that go to Chesney shows are worth the tickets alone. However, I also feel Kenny's music is great. Just listen to "Beer in Mexico" or "Young" to get a feel for this guy's music. I like it, and others do not...to each his own.

Alas, the KC tailgates are drunk fests versus the true pinnacle of tailgating at Buffett shows. Maybe over time they will evolve, alas, I must say you will never see a confederate flag on my bus, but you will see palm trees on the back with "FINS BUS" plates!

Go Kenny...he is NO JIMMY, and he is not the next Jimmy, but he will be fun when our boy retires and I intend to move the party to KC.

See y'all at Kenny 5/29, The Police 5/26, Jimmy in NYC 6/12, Alan Jackson, Chris Isaak, and Tom Petty this summer before the Jimmy shows out west in October!

FINS UP!

Who the hell are the Drive by Truckers

Southern rock band, in that alt-country subset world. A friend of mine awears by them, sees them everytime they come to town. Really good singer-songwriter driven material with tight musicianship. Jason Isbell just left the band, partially because they had three distinct songwriters in the band and it led to a dysfunction into what direction the music was headed in. Would never think of them in the context of a tailgating conversation tho.

OH NO HE DIN'T!!!! DBT...LOL.....

My thoughts on the Kenny/Jimmy debate.

There will never be another Buffett..period. HOWEVER, he does not have a license on the "tropical" feeling music. Kenny is NO More a copy cat then any other trop rock artist. In fact Kenny was already a star in his own right before his music made a turn with the tropical theme. This next part I will say and duck....While Buffett may be popular and loved by us...He is not loved by the masses. Do you know how many times I have gotten the eye roll when I mention I am a parrothead? SO with that said....why would any artist want to copy him if he doesn't appeal to the masses? So why would we accuse Kenny of hoopping on the band wagon? Seems to me if he wanted to make money he would have copied some teeny bopper boy band...afterall the youth are a driving force in the economy...they have the most disposable income (momy and daddy give it to them). They certainly (most of them) don't even know who Buffett is....

I think Kenny does speak from his heart with his music. In fact his best songs in my humble opinion, are those that he actually wrote...and THEY have the tropical theme....

IMHO...I think part of the problem with KC is and I could be wrong ...It seems hes never acknowledged he might be taking artistic liscense off of Jimmy. Where as other trop rock type artist acknowledge Jimmy influence onn them. I know Eric Stone makes reference in songs also the Boat Drunks do. My opinion I could be wrong.

First, back to the original topic. Tailgates.

I've been to 4 Chesney shows in the last 3 years (and 4 JB shows).
The weekday tailgates are no comparison. Buffett Phans are in the parking lot early regardless of the day. I posted pictures earlier in the thread from a week day show in Greensboro for Chesney.

As far as the Saturday, Chesney show in Columbia, fans were there early and drinking heavily. However, with the exception of the staged events, for the most part, the Chesney tailgate was no different from a tailgate for a sporting event. Buffett Phans hands down put more thought and creativity into the sporting event.

As far as the shows, although I like KC and his music, I don't care if I see him again over the next year or two (I definitely will see Buffett as often as it is feasible) Kenny brings great energy to his shows and solid production, but it seems like he's lacking in the ability to change the show.
In Columbia, he trotted Uncle Kracker out for the 3rd time in the 4 shows that I saw and they played the same 4 song set that I saw (and liked) in Charlotte 2 years ago. This time it was stale.

Also, he uses video screens for computer generated graphics and it was the same graphics from last year's tour. Again, just not seeing anything new this year. (In fact, he took out one of the coolest things about his show, the opening. Last year they revved the crowd up with some classic 80's rock, leading into AC/DC's "You shook me all night long", then used the Kenny-Cam to follow his path from back stage up onto the stage and showed the band and all that was going on before they dropped the curtain. This whipped the crowd into a frenzy for the opening song_

In response to the sell-out of the stadiums, he did not sell out Williams-Brice. He had 44,000 there, but there was room for more.

Finally, (although I like KC and agree that others can follow JB's success) he is definitely copying Jimmy (which may be good business sense)

1. Corona sponsorship (replacing Cruzan)
2. Addition of 4 horns to the band this year
3. Parking Lot Video similar to JB's CILCIA
4. Some of his actions during the show, when you can just tell he's following the playbook.

My bottom line: I've encouraged BNers to check out a KC show for the energy and the mixture of Hawaiian Shirts and Cowboy Boots. If you like his music, his concerts are good entertainment.

Personally, I'm looking to see if his concert experiences have the same staying power as Jimmy's over the long haul. I've never left a JB show saying, "I'm done with Jimmy for a while," but I did after the last KC show that I saw.

First off..
I love a few of KCs songs.. (of course these he does not play in concert)

I have never been to a KC tailgate so I will not even try to judge..

But my laugh is we keep trying to fill shoes..

the Black Crowes were to be the next Aerosmith
never happened..
Widespresd Panic was going to be the next Grateful Dead
Un not so much

How many bands have we heard.. this is the next
and not only do they not fill the shoes they have been choosen
for, but they never really go anywhere???
I know KC is big and is making $$$$$$
but let's face it.. Jimmy happened.. pure and simple..
could have been one of a few.. and it was Jimmys' name that
was drawn.. IMHO there is no way to map a career in music..
the public loves you.. long term or short term or they don't,
simple as that..

That is what a Texas Buffett concert is for. You don't have to bother putting up with power-hurl drinkers who might have been gnawing the slats of their crib when I graduated college.
