If we get the garden going, we will probably do the usual: One hot pepper plant, 2/3 cucumber plants and a couple of tomatoes (cherry, plum and probably beefsteak). A guy in my development rents out a tiller for something like $25 for a couple of hours and we usually get that to turn over the garden. He delivers it which is a plus. The problem is he did not advertise in the community newsletter this spring so I need to find last's spring issues and call him up.Joetown Parrothead wrote:Just got the garden all finished up for the first planting...

Do you till first? Do you add anything to the soil? I usually add some peat humus and manure. I've got some composted leaves I was thinking about throwing in too.
Twenty degrees and the hockey games on...

I have 1/4 acre garden lot, I have it deep tilled in the fall by a local farmer, and then till it twice in the spring before planting. I use compost mainly sometimes add a little manure during the fall deep till.

Well, my garden is considerably smaller (life in suburbia). Sounds cool - have fun growing!Joetown Parrothead wrote:Hockey Mon wrote:If we get the garden going, we will probably do the usual: One hot pepper plant, 2/3 cucumber plants and a couple of tomatoes (cherry, plum and probably beefsteak). Just bought scotch bonnet plant, habanero pepper plant, Jalapeno pepper plant and one called salsa pepper. One yellow pear tomato and some nasturtiums. Still need to get more tomatos.
I will be buying a bunch more herbs...Some thyme, lemon verbena and such a little later. The average latest frost date for here is May 26...so it's a little early to plant. I grow my veggies in pots in my driveway where they can get some sun. For right now I will take them outside during the day and put them on my screen porch at night.
I also got a couple of "black eye susan vines" for my folks. They are my dad's favorites and I always need to get them right away before they sell out.
After Mid May I will get serious and get all my annuals. I buy WAY too many flowers...but I love them.

Sometimes I wish that, but I do enjoy fresh veggies also, but not having the yard work might be nice! On the other hand I wouldn't have my fire pit Tiki Bar area....

We do not have quite as much land as you, as someone else said, life in suburbia.
But with that being said. Two types of tomato, habanero and Tai Red hot peppers, Swiss Chard, two types of lettuce, yellow and red onion, rhubarb. My wife has the herb garden, what I know about is oregano, basil, marjoram, thyme, lemon grass, and several others. Small rose garden too.
We lay down a layer of compost in the fall and spring and I turn it in (by hand, need to get one of those tillers). Then we put down a layer of straw during the growing season to keep weeds down and moisture in, and then turn that under in the fall as well.

I only have a little garden--cilantro, basil, flat leaf parsley, lavender, Portuguese hot peppers, and jalapenos. I love the smell of fresh herbs in my garden! Last year I grew some killer scotch bonnets and hotter-than-normal jalapenos.
