Wyland Whaling Wall North Lauderdale 6/06-14

Post by Tiki Bar »

This is some super exciting news for me!! BG introduced me to the wonderful world of Wyland a couple years ago, and it was love at first sight! I think all of his work is amazing... murals, paintings, brushdrawings, sculpture, photography... and he's not so bad himself!! [smilie=battingeyes.gif] :D

The Balcony Girls and I went down to Key Largo in February of 2007 to watch him complete his last whaling wall in the United States... #95, "Keys to the Seas". It was incredibly cool to see him in action, taking mere minutes time and time again, to transform an open space into a magnificent life size, or larger-than-life, inhabitant of the sea!

And on top of all of that talent, is a fine specimen of a man, who is charming and genuine, inspiring, and absolutely wonderful with kids. You get lost in time watching him at work.

Anyway, it turns out that wall #99 scheduled in another country fell through, and their loss is our gain. This will definitely be the last wall done in the United States, as well as the last wall done before the final wall #100 in China, for the Olympics.

If you can get to North Lauderdale, I'd highly recommend it! :D

"2008 Olympic Artist Wyland to Paint Whaling Wall Mural in Celebration of the International Year of the Reef 2008

05-27-2008

Washington, DC. May 19, 2008 – Acclaimed marine life artist and conservation advocate Wyland has slated the city of North Lauderdale for the penultimate mural in his internationally renowned Whaling Wall art project.

The artist’s goal over the last twenty-five years has been to raise awareness about marine life conservation and global water issues through his Whaling Walls, a series of 100 murals — some as large as a hectare in size — in more than 70 cities throughout the world.

“This has been a fantastic journey,” the artist said. “When I started this project more than two decades ago, I never would have dreamed the project would be where it is today.”

An avid SCUBA diver, Wyland has seen changes among the reefs he has dived over the last thirty years. His 10 foot by 1000 foot mural at 7399 McNab Road will be seen by millions of people every year, as a testament to the importance of protecting coral reefs around the world for future generations.

The artist will paint this mural to celebrate the ICRI International Year of the Reef 2008, a worldwide campaign to raise awareness about the value and importance of coral reefs and threats to their sustainability, and to motivate people to take action to protect them.

The artist’s work has garnered him a place in the Guinness Book for World Records, his own show on Discovery Channel’s “Animal Planet Network,” and a place on the front lines for preserving marine life throughout the world. He is the author of more than 18 books, including “Hold Your Water: 68 Things You Need to Know to Keep Our Planet Blue,” and his non-profit Wyland Foundation is actively involved in clean water education. He has been recognized by the United Nations for his conservation efforts, and recently finished the fourth year of a five-year campaign promoting clean water issues throughout the United States. This year, as an official artist for the 2008 United States Olympic Team, Wyland has raised awareness about the “Green Olympics,” an international movement to focus attention on the environment during the Olympic year.

An opening ceremony will kick-off Wyland’s work at 12 p.m. on June 6, followed by a dedication ceremony upon completion of the mural at 12 p.m. on June 14

Boy howdy!! What a weekend that weekend was! One of my best ever!! :D :D

Highlights:

Wyland was painting the wall, and interacting with the crowd like he does, and next thing I know BG's holding the phone to his ear and he's talking to Boop! :D :D :D Wyland told her "...you should be here with us! Sorry my Flyers beat your Penguins, I have to go paint now! BYE!"  That got the crowd chuckling, and he was talking about it for a couple minutes with Guy Harvey.

Wyland had some blues tunes playing, and was groovin' to it while painting. He started playing to the crowd a bit, tossing his paintbrush twirling in the air like a drum stick, painting behind his back, and just enjoying the moments. I thought I was getting video of it all, but was sadly mistaken, especially after what happened next. He finished the turtle he was working on, motioned to throw the brush to the crowd, and then he actually did!!! :D

I was looking at my camera to see if I got it all, realized I hadn't, turned around, and there's BG sitting with the paint brush, picking pieces of grass off of it!!! :D :D She had paint on her hand, and grass on her knee! I missed it as it happened, but it seems Wyland threw the brush, she got it, and some tool / fool tried to wrestle it away from her!! :o I couldn't even believe it, and neither could the people who saw it! He tried to take it out of her hands, and told her he wanted it, and pouted when she told him he couldn't have it. He was pretty much eyeing it and scowling at her the rest of the day. :-?

(She was later seen using the brush to add her flair to some of the sea creatures! )

When the cops came, we jumped in the Wyland mobile and made our getaway!

We were in Walgreens Saturday morning, just looking around, when I hear “does the customer with the convertible know it’s raining outside??”  It was a downpour, and I was soaked before I even got to the car to put the roof up! Oops!

Next stop was junkin’ at the local thrift store… I bought a couple Florida ka-nick ka-nacks, and BG was thrilled to find a hinged top storage chest for her front entry, to hold beach bags and such! I do declare she was just plain tickled about it, and the fact that it fit in the damp back seat of the car and would make the trip home! It’s the little things, ya know?

Saturday Night Live trombonist Steve Turre was on hand both Friday and Saturday. He is one of the featured musicians on Wyland’s CD titled ''Rhythms of the Sea,'' which is a collection of ''eco-conscious'' music set to the artist’s lyrics. Along with a few tunes on the trombone, he played different combinations of conch shells.

At the dedication for the wall, it was more than apparent how much the local officials appreciated Wyland’s gift to their city. It was also obvious how passionate Wyland is about conserving our planet and resources; how much he appreciates ‘the people’… his collectors and fans; how happy he was that BG and I were there  ; how much he loves his mother, who was at the first wall, was at this wall #99, and will be at the last in Beijing at the Olympics; how much he appreciates his staff at the Wyland Foundation, including Roy Chavez, who has volunteered for 68 walls, and will for the one in Beijing; and how encouraging and supportive he is of young artists.

Little Guy is 12 years old, and an amazing artist, a very mature and grounded young man, and a pleasure to talk to. He signed a lot of autographs in the two days we were there, and I think we’ll hear more from him down the road. We remembered him from Key Largo last year, and I got his mom’s email address to send her a cool picture that BG had taken of him then.

BG and I also visited again with Gary, and finally met Dave and Alissa. Truly good and uplifting people, who I’ve been enjoying getting to know over the past year or so. They are behind the line of photo greeting cards that I happened upon and became completely captivated with! They do my heart good!

The road trip across Alligator Alley in the Sebring convertible was chock full of fun. On the way there, we listened to the RM Jimmy interview about Take The Weather With You, and I took my shirt off while driving, just because I could without anyone noticing! The drive home was 'wipers on, sunglasses on, wipers on, sunglasses on'! It would rain in droves where I could barely see, and would have pulled over if it wasn't a straight shot... then poof, the sun would be shining from behind puffy white clouds and blue sky! I don't know how many times BG said "we're home free" because the rain would dwindle away and it would be nothing but sunny skies ahead, for about 5-10 minutes! I did see a 3' alligator on the shoulder, but was going too fast to determine if it was dead or alive. We rocked out to Evangeline, and enjoyed some Aaron Neville and Linda Ronstadt, but my favorite part was watching BG listen for the first time to Jimmy and Savannah Jane reading "Jolly Mon"!

Saturday night, we 'Buffettized' O'Maddy's in Gulfport! The only Jimmy on the jukebox was A1A, and we played the whole thing, and a couple songs twice! First up was Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season, since everyone was freaked out about the severe storms in the area, and the water spouts they were producing. It was very surreal, and very cool!

And Sunday, well, it was another great day – a very accomplished day!
