Need Some Help In San Diego

Post by seminoledq »

We are going to San Diego in a couple weeks and I am looking for some resataurant/activity recommendations. This is our first non-Florida vacation so we are really shooting from the hip. I know we are going to Sea World and the Zoo, maybe a Padres game. I want to go to Dick's Last Resort and the Tiki "something" in the Gaslamp. Me, wife and 2 kids (11 and 7) but they can hang with the best of them. They are already veterans of Key West. Our hotel is on Vacation Island in Mission Bay. What say the BNers on things to do and see in San Diego?

There's the old Mission Bay amusement park with a fun roller coaster. There's TJ, just a short trolley ride away, be sure to bring your passports. There's LaJolla beach and the Scripts Institute and Coronado Island, Balboa Park and the Wild Animal Park. Oh, I almost forgot, there is the USN base where you can sometimes get tours of the ships. Also, there are the San Diego Duck tours.

Is Balboa park the museum district? I have also heard that La Jolla is nice for a day at the beach/shppong/ and has nice restaurants. Yes/no?

We were there in April, this trip we did a lot of hiking in the parks and walking the beaches, just enjoying the weather. Also took in a ballgame, really nice downtown ballpark. We've done the other "touristy" things in the past, so not so much this time.

Check out the San Diego Go Card, it could save you a lot of money depending on what you like to do. http://www.gosandiegocard.com/

--Zoo is great, but I preferred the Wild Animal Park. Same ownership as the Zoo, but in a much more open and natural setting. In Escondido, not a far drive at all.

--Balboa Park is where the Zoo is located, but you could spend a day there and not even see the zoo. Lots of museums (many on the "go card")

--You'll be really close to Sea World, you can easily do that in one day.

--Coronado Island is fun, take the bridge over (or a ferry) and see the hotel and the beach.

--La Jolla area is nice for high-end shopping, see the harbor seals on the beach or visit Torrey Pines golf course (the US Open is there next week). And nice restaurants.

--tour the USS Midway. Right downtown, you could do this on a day when you were at the Gaslamp Quarter, ballpark or Seaport Village (shopping/restaurants).

--Mission Beach/Pacific Beach area (near you) is great for people watching, a boardwalk runs for miles along the beach. If you're looking for a burger & beer or beach shops, PB will have a lot more than Mission Beach.

--get on the water, Mission Bay is nice for kayaks.

--tons and tons of great hiking, PM me if you'd like more details on that or anything else. I could go on and on... :D

I'm a San Diego native here, 8) but I agree with Dutch...
ALL the options listed above are the really great things to do in my SD!! :D

For an awesome sight, head north of Pacific Beach up to Mount Soledad.
you'll see an incredible memorial to our war veterans at the foot of the cross, along with
the most panoramic vista of ALL San Diego County (from Mexico to LA!).

...then, head down the hill to the Cove in La Jolla where at the Children's Pool,
you will see sea lions all over the place on the beach. Their pups are out right now, too.
$#@&...only Vegas again?? Padres ...gotta start believin'!Bring on '14 Spring Training!

I LOVE San Diego (though not as much as Florida) especially downtown/Seaport Village and Gaslamp District

Mister Tiki's Mai Tai Lounge in Gaslamp District is probably what you are looking for.

Here is a list of other Tiki/Parrothead places in San Diego:

A lot of very good suggestions!

Sailboat tour of the bay? http://harborsailboats.com/skippered_charters.php I took a class at Harbor Sailboats and spent the week sailing last time I was in San Diego. 8)

Glad I wasn't too proud and did the touristy thing and stopped into Kansas City Barbeque last time. It was gutted by fire yesterday. :(

The "you've lost that lovin' feeling" scene in Top Gun was filmed there.
