Anything and Everything US OPEN

For the first time the US Open comes to my city by the sea. Playing it on a public course and also the site of my personal best round of golf ( 78 ). I was out to Torrey on Sunday and the feel and look is obvious that its not JUST a golf tournament. I have my ticket in hand for Sat the 14th and cannot wait to be there. Some guys I know that are scratch golfers played it a cpl weeks ago and struggled to break 100. Its going to be a monster!

I'm pulling for Lefty. Can't be too bad. Justin Timberlake [smilie=puking.gif] broke 100.

Trying to decide if I want to spend my 4th of July at the Congressional. Could be interesting, seeing one live. Depends on who shows up I suppose.

I wanted to add FIELD to the poll, but I screwed it up

I'll take field. I can't believe that Tiger will be ready after his time off. I hope he is and will be rooting for him, but I think this one is for one of the not so starry stars.

the smart-ass in me says Federer (the other US Open), but given the choices, let's go with Tiger.

I just don't think Tiger can do it the first time back out. And he knows a lot of people feel that way, which is exactly why he might.

I'm a fan of Lefty but hate to see him paired with el Tigre the first two days.

I say Tiger doesnt even make the cut. I a big fan but with that much time off in US open conditions, I dont think so. One of the keys to winning the open is driving accuracy, not his best stat. However, Tiger does dominate at Torry Pines, although for a US open set up it is a completely different course. Like he said last year about Oakmont a ligitimate scratch couldnt brake 100 on that course. I was lucky enough to play #2 in 05 not long after the open (have played it several times, 2 handicap) and shot 102.

NBC sent out Matt Lauer, Romo, Timberlake, and a contest winner to play the Open set up at Torrey from the tips. Their round airs in the hour before the final round Sunday. I think Romo is scratch, Lauer is a 10, Timberlake an 8, and the contest winner (who has non-smoking related lung cancer) is about a 10. The scores are on the web if anyone wants to see them (I don't want to ruin it).

the biggest problem for an amateur is the length first, then the rough. i play with some really long ball hitters but even they don't have the length. take 13, 614 yards par 5. a minimum 240 yard carry over the canyon, then the pros are looking at about 260 yards into an elevated green.

my bet, 3 of the 4 if not 4 of the 4 can't carry the canyon....

1 - 488 yds par 4
4 - 448 / 488 yds par 4
5 - 452 yds par 4
6 - 515 yds par 4
7 - 461 yds par 4
9 - 612 yds par 5
12 - 475 / 504 yds par 4
13 - 614 yds par 5
15 - 478 yds par 4
18 - 575 yds par 5

the USGA yardage guide would make these par 4s par 5s on a standard course. i'd bet, with the possible exception of 4 from the front tees, 99.999% of all amateurs can't reach any of these greens in regulation.

here's the AP story with results about the Lauer 4some.

BTW

Romo - 2.2 handicap index (tried but failed to qualify for the open this year)

Timberlake - 6.0 handicap index

Lauer - 6.2 handicap index

6 is a par 5 during the Buick Open and for the US Open, the fairway was narrowed and a tee box made. So its a 515 yd Par 4 :o

Any golf couse that plays to 7600 + yards is very very long. You throw in US open rough and 470 + par 4's and 600+ yard par 5's some of these holes may not be rechable by tour players in regulation if they hit it in the rough. I worked in the golf business in Myrtle Beach for a number of years and have played with mini tour players, tour players, and very good club pros who hit it a long long way 320 -340 +. I dont think (may be wrong) that the set up at Torry Pines is going to be as difficult as some of the past Open couses have been i.e. oakmont, pinehurst where the winning scoeres are over par. For the average 15+ golfer a 240 yard carry is a long way however even the shortest tour players can hit it 275+ all day. It should be interesting to watch. Anyone know how the greens are rolling, I would imagine 12,13 + that will make a big difference coming out of the rough.

As of Monday they were metered at 13.5. Forcast for Torrey is fog and coastal clouds with afternoon winds thru Thurs. Fri - Mon is for sunshine and again coastal winds. Having played Torrey many times. The mornings are very nice, clouds and heavy air. The afternoon (around 1) the winds kick up and some holes (11, 12, 13) really begin to play much longer.

13.5 on Monday, I hope it doesnt dry out or they will be like marbel, I guess with all of the fog and clouds and ocean the golf course gets a fair amont of moisture
