Ok, I answered my own question, when you follow the code that makes RM work down the messy chain of encoding (hiding), you find that it is actually an ASF file that is streamed and served up from a possible 2 servers. In order to stream an ASF file on the iphone it must be converted before reaching the phone. A 3rd-party product called ooTunes does this for you for $20, (does all media streaming for you for that amount)

But can't you access iTunes from the iPhone? RM is streamed through iTunes as well, don't need to shell out anything for 3rd party programs.

I dunno, do you have to pay for itunes streaming? I only ordered mine today and was told it will arrive anywhere from 10-21 days

You don't on the PC. I doubt you have to pay for it on the iPhone either, except for data/airtime/whatever...

RM is semi-hidden in iTunes, though, I think it's listed under some weird genre like Folk or something.
