How Do You Address Your In-Laws?

All jokes aside...

For those of you that have or had in-laws, I'm wondering how you and your spouse address them? My dad always called my mom's parents "Mom" and "Dad". Do you find that old fashioned, or simply respectful? Any of you call them mom & dad?

What about using their first names? I assume this is most commonly used by all of you. Are you comfortable with this? For those of you that knew your in-laws in childhood, was it difficult to start calling them by their first names?

What about the ultra-formal "Mr." or "Mrs."? Anyone use this? If my husband's parents were living, I would be expected to call them Monsieur and Madame. In fact, it took my husband a while before he was comfortable with calling my parents by their first names.

What about you? I'm anxious to hear your answers.

I only have one...hubby's dad is living but has never been part of our lives. I call my MIL "Mom" and she likes it very much.

Hubby calls my dad "Dad" and my step mom her first name, which is how we all address her.

Hubby called my mom "Mom" when she was living. She always thought that was cool!

I call my in-laws "mom and dad". My wife calls my father "pop", as that's what I call him.

I don't call my in-laws "mom" and "dad" because they are not my mom and dad.

I call them by their first names. Or pains in my asses if the occasion calls for such.

I do call my hubby's grandfather "papa" because that is what *everyone* calls him.

quite frankly some of my past inlaws were addressed differently depending on if I was talking directly to them or about them

I actually do that quite often. More often than their names.

My FIL and SMIL are "Don and Judi" but I usually refer to them as "Papa and Nana" as a collective unit because that is what the kids call them. My mom and step-dad are "Grammy and Papo."

Everyone just calls me sh*thead.

A little of both at our house.

I use my in-laws' first names, Lacey calls my parents mom and dad.

Our son-in-law uses our first names

Father-in-law - I don't call him anything. I don't talk to him unless he starts the conversation.

Mother-in-law - Vieja.

"Grandparent names" were a real blessing for me. I never called my in-laws
anything before they had those. My parents were Mama and Daddy to me,
and if I had to get my in-laws attention, I just said "hey". Rude? Probably, but
not intentionally. I'm pretty sure hubby did the same.

Now that I'm the mil, I get called Mom, which is fine but seems weird. Once the
new granddaughters can call us something, I expect that'll be my name.

My father in law's name was long and complicated. Everyone, including me, called him "H".

My MIL ... her name is Virginia ... when I want to get her attention, that's what I call her ... in casual converstion, it's V.A.

I call my in-laws by their first names. Their request. I asked them how they wanted to be addressed. My wife calls my mom gram, as that is what the grandkids call her. My mom wanted to be called mom, by as others have said here, my wife has only had one mom. No disrespect to my mom, but she isn't it.

MIL: Momma Barb, still lives in Tacoma!

FIL that passed away was DAD or Brother. One of the best men I have ever met! I do miss him.. I never forget my wife (Sheryl) was giving me hell for something and Terry told her he would keep me and get rid of her if she didn't chill. That was about 20 years ago and I still remember it. Also one time we went camping in Wenatchee Washington and we pulled up to the camp site and he asked if any one was hungry, We all were and he pop the Hood of the Pick up and brought out Chicken and Potatoes and Onions he had wrapped in foil and threw on the Motor before we left Tacoma... We all set around picked out and laughed about the way he did it. He told us that is the way they did it in Texas when he was a kid. He was from Porter TX.

I have NEVER called my MIL or FIL (when either was alive) mom or dad. Always first name.
My husband generally calls my mom by her first name but in writing it is always mom. Not sure why.
