How Do You Prefer To Be Addressed?
Moderator: SMLCHNG
When I was about 12, our neighbors had 2 young daughters-one of them referred to my parents as Roz and Joe and she was immediately corrected by her mother. She then told her mother, that no, you call your friends by their first name. My parents were agreeable so these two girls called my parents by their first names.
I started doing the same-largely because calling them mom and dad, or Mrs and Mr...sounded odd when two young girls called them Roz and Joe.
Called them by their first names the rest of their lives (though occasionally I would kid them and call them mommy and daddy!)
I have no kids, nor nieces or nephews, but at school I am definitely Ms....

I was brought up in the era of adults are always "Mr" and "Mrs". I still refer to across the street neighbors (who were at the Raleigh JB show) as Mr. Lastname (even though he is probably a good number of years younger than me... eek).
Since moving to the south, have learned about the Miss 'first name' thing.
But this whole thread makes me think of the era where my mom tried to get me and sis to adopt the "yes ma'm, no sir" manners that our friends kids(from the south) had. Funny, that didn't work to well with me.
So while I do like the formality / tradition of the Mr and Mrs - can appreciate and understand first names. I also agree with earlier posts about the Aunt/Uncle distinctions - it is appropriate in the right circumstance.

Okay, how about what do you call a former teacher when you date him? The year after I graduated high school, I went back for homecoming and a former teacher asked me out. On our first date, I realized I was still calling him "Morehouse" his last name. (We never called him Mr. Morehouse, he was the young cool teacher, he was just Morehouse). I asked him what should I call him if we're going to be dating. He said call me by my first name....he had the same first name as my father....talk about awkward....but we got over it.Tequila Revenge wrote:We raised our boys to call adults Mr. and Mrs. out of respect. I ran into my high school drafting teacher and could not call him by his first name. We have some very close friends who's gilrs call me Uncle Dan.My own niece calls me Uncle Dork
I still insist I'm much more of a goober than a dork.

At one of my schools I was Miss Peech (ala Miss Peach of the Kelley School comic) for years. That came about from one of my students who couldn't say his s blends so "speech" became "peech". He'd yell across campus, "Hey, Peech!" and wave madly. Needless to say, the staff got a kick out of it and it stuck. There were kids at that school who never knew my real name, and there are some folks who still refer to me that way when I run into them.![]()

Once upon a time long, long ago I used to be a youth sports coach and called all my kids, "Tiger." That way when I saw them around town and they's yell out, "Hey Coach!" All I had to remember was, "Hi there Tiger!"![]()

Here's a story that's pretty typical of the times:
When I was growing up in S.W. Cedar Rapids, my grandmother (who'd became widowed just a few years prior) moved here from Nova Scotia to be near us.
One night my parents went out with friends of theirs, and Gramma was summoned for baby-sitting duty for me and my other two siblings. (My youngest sister hadn't been born yet).
The lady who lived next door to us (probably in her mid-60's at the time) came over and introduced herself to Gramma. They talked for several hours, played cribbage, and watched a movie on TV that night.
They became the best of friends, and for the rest of their lives (30-plus years), all they ever called each other was "Mrs. Brush" and "Mrs. Joseph."
They went shopping together, took trips together, and, of course, played cribbage together. Wherever they went, whatever they did, they ALWAYS addressed each other as "Mrs. Brush" and "Mrs. Joseph."
Amazing, huh?
As for ME, I DON'T like to be called "Mr. Joseph." That's my father.
I prefer being called by my first name, Garry, or, if I meet any B.N.ers, if they want to call me "Wino," that's fine.
as long as the good folks at A.A. don't call me that.

For kids - it is up to the parents - they are one's responsible for the values etc they give their kids - so to some I am aunty Jenny or just Jenny. There is no Mr and Mrs out here - too bloody formal
As for me .... I answer to a few things .... Creeky, Jen, Jenny, creekster, hey you .... my most favourite is "aunty Jenny" from my nieces and nephews though!
I have a saying "my friends call me Jennifer, but you can call me Jenny
(in actual truth - I went by Jennifer till about 21 - so those pre 21 still call me Jennifer and those post 21 - it is Jenny. If I move to exec at work - I think I should change it to Jennifer - sounds more posh
