Don Imus does it again - will he survive

Post by ph4ever »

 Will his career survive this?

Don Imus, the radio jock who was fired last year for calling the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos," has once again put his foot in his mouth in comments related to the world of sports.

When one of Imus's on-air partners discussed Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam Jones' legal troubles, Imus asked, "What color is he." When told that Jones is African-American, Imus said, "Well, there you go. Now we know."

My first response is that nothing's going to happen, at least not of consequence. He's already proven once that he's too popular, and therefore important to a media business's bottom line, to go away for long.
Take me for what I am, a star newly emerging.
I accept the new found man, and I set the twilight reeling.

You may be right - no publicity is bad publicity. However, if the public put enough pressure on the sponsors to pull their ads, I think he's done.

The only "saving grace" for him might be that Pac-man is not a sympathetic cause like the Rutgers women.

Disclaimer: I was a daily Imus listener for years until I bought my first iPod 3 years ago. I haven't listened to him since then.

I don't think he should get fired. He's become rich and famous for saying things like this for more than 40 years. That's why WABC, and every other radio station he's ever worked for, hired him. If they cave to pressure and fire him (and I can already see Al Sharpton salivating over how much publicity he can milk out of this) then every radio personality who says something that anyone might find offensive has to go too. We can't be selective in our outrage at politically incorrect statements.

It will be interesting...but i say nothing happens...Johnny Miller made some reference about Rocco and being Italian during the US Open last week...not much was made of it!

!NBC Sports golf analyst Johnny Miller apologized for his description of U.S. Open runner-up Rocco Mediate, saying the comments had "absolutely nothing to do with his ethnicity."

Mediate, a 45-year-old Pennsylvanian of Italian heritage, held a one-stroke lead over Tiger Woods during the fourth round Sunday. Miller said Mediate "looks like the guy who cleans Tiger's swimming pool." He also said, "Guys with the name 'Rocco' don't get on the trophy, do they?"

"I apologize to anyone who was offended by my remarks," Miller said in a statement Friday through NBC. "My intention was to convey my affection and admiration for Rocco's everyman qualities and had absolutely nothing to do with his ethnicity. I chose my words poorly and in the future will be more careful."

The Johnny Miller incident was such a crack-up to me.

Maybe it's my west-coast location... but when did being Italian get associated with being the hired help like a pool man?? :o
I was watching at that moment that he made the comment, and thought likewise,
"Rocco does not look the part of a championship golfer, or athletic in the least, but rather more like that of your everyday-Joe Schmoe"

The Don Imus deal blows over because he is no longer employed by a huge corporation (MSNBC, under the General Electric umbrella)

..besides, Pacman Jones IS a douche-bag... uh-oh, is that gonna get me banned by feminists? :o
$#@&...only Vegas again?? Padres ...gotta start believin'!Bring on '14 Spring Training!

I say he's done this time because he knows he's on commercial radio and as long as he is, he'll be muzzled.

If he wants to continue this type of radio, go get a deal with satellite (if they would even offer you a deal) like Stern did. Stern gets away with similar outrageous antics without fear of repercussion.

I'm all for freedom of speech, but in this day and age, it's becoming rare. I don't have a problem with what he said, maybe he was trying to be wacky.

Of course, anyone who's ever heard the stories about Imus from back in the 80s also knows he feels this in his heart, not just "on-air".

I just never found him entertaining and that's the biggest sin of all.

I almost never watch golf but I was watching when Miller made that comment, I never once thought it was raciest or about Mediate's heritage, I thought it was more to do with Rocco being a average Joe.

And I don't know what Johnny Miller looks like, he could be white, black, purple......

As far as Imus, I don't know how anyone with a brain cell could stand listening to him on the radio for more than 5 minutes. When he was on MCNBC or CNBC in the morning, if I was home and I came across his show I would try to watch but it was so bad, the cowboy hat, the horrible banter, the dumb jokes...just plain awful. The best thing he ever did was make that comment about Rutgers and get kicked off the air saving everyone from him.

I think that the reason he is back on terrestrial radio to begin with was that there was pressure for him to be fired from the media and special interest groups and that is why he was fired, however those interests are not his listeners. I think that his regular listeners are a demographic that advertisers want to target so they will keep him on

who gives a flying f' what anyone else says? giving negative comments puts as much if not more money in guys like Imus's pocket then positive comments. there is no such thing as negative publicity. who cares? I am sure there is someone saying something bad somewhere in the world right now and I don't care about that person as much as I don't care about some loser just because he is on the radio and/ or tv.
the hit and run is as good as any religion around this time of year . . .
