Because he is an upgrade. And they gave up very little to get him. Yes it will help with season tickets for the new stadium and the PSL's, but in the grand scheme of things he is a better QB than Pennington or Clemons.
The Jets have a good offensive line, and good offensive skill players. And Favre allows the Jets to open up the field which is something Pennington could never do.
Look at the schedule.
@ MIAMI, NE, @ SD - Jets open 1-2, maybe 2-1...
ARZ, CIN, @OAK, KC, @BUF, STL - Jets could easily go 5-1 thru this stretch
@NE, @TEN - 0-2, maybe 1-1
DEN, @SF, BUF, @SEA, MIA Easily 4-1, 3-2 to close out the season.
Add it up and it a very possible 9-10 win season. 10 wins won't lock up a playoff spot, but they will be there at the end.
Pennington actually had one of the highest passer ratings for the Jets ever. And yes, that doesn't say much.
You're right, it doesn't. He is a weak armed QB that can't use the whole field. Certain throws he has a lot of trouble making. Favre's playmaking ability, and his arm strength allows the Jets to open up the field. Makes defending the Jets much harder.

PENNINGTON LANDS IN MIAMI
Posted by Mike Florio on August 8, 2008, 9:24 p.m.
In the end, quarterback Chad Pennington wasn’t unemployed for long.
Jay Glazer of FOX reports that Pennington has agreed to terms with the Dolphins on a two-year deal.
Pennington, who was drafted by Fins V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells when Parcells was the G.M. of the Jets in 2000, becomes an instant candidate for the starting quarterback job in Miami.
And, ironically, Pennington will get a crack at the team that dumped him in Week One of the regular season, when the Jets travel to Miami.

BATCH BUSTS COLLARBONE
Posted by Mike Florio on August 8, 2008, 9:45 p.m.
Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch suffered a broken right collarbone during Friday night’s preseason opener in Pittsburgh.
The injury apparently came during a busted play in the second quarter, when running back Mewelde Moore failed to take a hand off and Batch ran the ball on his own, gaining six yards.
The duration of Batch’s absence isn’t known. The team currently has no other veteran quarterback on the roster. The other quarterbacks in camp are Dennis Dixon and Mike Potts.

Even though this was only the first pre-season game so nothing much should be taken out of it, from what I see in the media here is that if Brady goes down, there is no good back up for the Pats, even with Cassel. He played horrible from what I hear. I'm not taking too much out of the play yet.....

Yea there's a waiting list about 10 years long. I've been on it for about 4 years now...TB is correct they feel like they can win now and this is why they made the move. The second reason is PR one, either next week or 2 weeks from now the Jets are going to announce their PSL's for the new stadium. When the Giants did this alot of fans were up in arms. At least they had a Superbowl to back them up. The Jets???? Stu-Gots!!
Now they have a good reason to charge fans 20k for a seat license. Their excuse will be we are trying to Win now!!! We got the elite QB in the NFL...blah blah blah.....

Well compared to the Packers right now, the Jets are weaker at WR then the Packers. But if you look at the Jets receiving core vs where the Packers receiving core was at the start of last season nobody thought that the Packers had a great bunch at the beginning of the season.
They have Coles and Cotchery at WR. Coles can spread the field more as a deep threat. Cotchery is more of a YAC WR. He gets alot of yards after he makes the catch. They have Chris Baker at TE who is a good TE. He can block and has enough speed to get open and catch the ball. Also have a rookie TE Keller who is supposed to be good..We'll see...
The thing is all of the receivers on the Jets have been only possession receivers because they never had a chance to really go Deep. Now they do. Bottom line it will be nice after year after year watching them on 3rd and 7. Throw a dump pass for 5 yards and be short of the first down!

Cotchery had 82 receptions each of thew last 2 years. That was 17th best in '07 and 16th best in '06. Also at TE is Bubba Franks who Favre has played with the last 8 yrs and who was helping Favre translate the Jets the play book terminology into Packer terminology to help Favre pcik up the play book a little quicker.

LEFTWICH LANDING IN THE ‘BURGH?
Posted by Mike Florio on August 9, 2008, 9:42 a.m.
A day after one former Marshall quarterback got out of the dumpster and found a job in Miami, another former Marshall signal-caller could be in business as well.
With Steelers backup Charlie Batch expected to miss four-to-six weeks with a broken collarbone, free-agent quarterback Byron Leftwich is expected to arrive in Pittsburgh on Saturday for a workout and, possibly, a contract.
Leftwich was a top-ten pick in the 2003 draft, but was cut by Jacksonville in late August of last year, after spending the entire offseason, training camp, and preseason as the Jags’ starter. He landed in Atlanta, but lasted only for the remainder of the year.
Leftwich recently got a tire-kicking from the Titans, but otherwise has drawn little interest.
The knock on him is a lack of mobility (to put it mildly) and a catalpult-style windup and release that gives opposing defenses way too much time to react.

Steelers consider Leftwich, Culpepper after Batch is injured
The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking at Byron Leftwich and Daunte Culpepper as possible replacements for backup quarterback Charlie Batch, who suffered a broken collarbone Friday night in a preseason victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
The two former starters have been without a team, searching for a place to land for the past six months. The injury to Batch has given them a chance, although not to compete as a starter, which is what they both wanted.

BRETT GETS TO RUN A LAP
Posted by Mike Florio on August 10, 2008, 12:50 p.m.
From the magic that is YouTube comes a video that shows Jets quarterback Brett Favre “running” a penalty lap, presumably after making a fumble in practice.
With Favre is center Nick Mangold, which causes us to conclude that it was a bad exchange between the two men that resulted in the fumble.
The incident supposedly happened earlier on Sunday.
UPDATE: Favre addressed the situation after practice. “It is part of [being on] the team. It’s not punishment. It’s more of a team unity thing. Nick [Mangold] and I ran it. I told to Eric [Mangini] day one that unless I pass out, I am going to try to do everything that everyone else does. I’m no different aside from being a little grey headed and a little bit older. Tony Richardson and I combined have 33 years, that counts for something. But ultimately it is about the team. Is it to get into shape? No. Is it a punishment? No. It is a reminder of how important the team is.”

Pro Bowl Guard Shawn Andrews finally arrives at Eagles camp. (by the way...he was born on Dec. 25th like somebody else we know...no, not Jesus...)
ANDREWS HAS ARRIVED
Posted by Mike Florio on August 10, 2008, 5:12 p.m.
The Eagles have announced that guard Shawn Andrews has reported to training camp.
Andrews has been removed from the reserve/did not report list and placed on the active/PUP list. To make room for him, the team waived offensive lineman Franklin Dunbar.
The placement of Andrews on the PUP list means that he won’t be practicing unless and until the team removes this designation.
And he has missed 18 full days of camp. If the team chooses to enforce the daily fines in excess of $15,000, he’ll owe more than $270,000.
It remains to be seen whether the team opts not to enforce the fines based on Andrews’ contention that his absence was due to depression.
