Johnson falls on left shoulder, leaves game in first quarter
Associated Press
CINCINNATI -- Bengals receiver Chad Johnson landed awkwardly while trying to make a catch in the first quarter against Detroit on Sunday night, then left the game to have his left shoulder examined.
Cornerback Brian Kelly hit Johnson as he tried to pull in a pass from Carson Palmer on the Bengals' first series, jarring the ball loose. Kelly came up with the interception and an off-balance Johnson landed on his left side.
The Pro Bowl receiver rolled around on the field in pain for several seconds, then got up and went to the sideline. Trainers examined the shoulder on the field before Johnson went to the locker room for further examination and treatment. He was ruled out for the rest of the game.
The Bengals already were without Pro Bowl receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, missing his second preseason game with a sore hamstring.
The Bengals don't have much experience at receiver behind Johnson and Houshmandzadeh. Rookie Marcus Maxwell started Sunday in Houshmandzadeh's spot. The Bengals released No. 3 receiver Chris Henry after his latest arrest in the offseason.
Johnson had lobbied for an offseason trade, but the Bengals refused. He abandoned his threat to sit out the season and reported to training camp on time, but wasn't able to participate in practice initially because he was still recovering from surgery to remove bone spurs from his right ankle. He looked close to full speed in practice last week.
Missing Johnson would be a huge setback to the Bengals, who also played without starting running back Rudi Johnson on Sunday. Rudi Johnson was slowed by a hamstring injuries last season and has missed the first two preseason games with a sore hamstring.
Chris Perry started at tailback for the Bengals.

Looks like the NFL wants to expand the season to 17 or 18 games.

Perhaps. But Tony Romo is still not a good QB. Not sure what the Patriots have to do with that fact . . .Capt.Flock wrote:Pats will not make it to the super bowldrunkpirate66 wrote:Tony Romo is not a good QB.

Not sure if you have noticed by I am not a fan of such stats. They are meaningless. Brady 50 td's and the "perfect" 16 - 0 record (like lots of worthless homeruns in baseball) just don't matter to me. Bledsoe put up some impressive numbers for awhile but I never thought of him as an "impressive" even in New England - decent . . . not great. I don't judge players but these numbers. I am sure Romo will have lots of tds and I am also sure he will go pretty high in fantasy football drafts too. Wouldn't want to give him the ball in a big game, though.Capt.Flock wrote:I predict that Tony Romo will have more passing TDs the the so called great Bradydrunkpirate66 wrote:Perhaps. Yea but having more passing touchdowns than Brady doesn't mean he'll win in the playoffs. Just ask Brady..... he had the record TD passes during the season but the Pats lost in the Super Bowl.Capt.Flock wrote:I predict that Tony Romo will have more passing TDs the the so called great Bradydrunkpirate66 wrote:Perhaps. MERRIMAN HAS TWO TORN KNEE LIGAMENTS
Posted by Mike Florio on August 23, 2008, 6:00 p.m.
Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman disclosed on Saturday that he has not one but two torn knee ligaments.
Both the PCL and the LCL are damaged.
“The combination makes it kind of difficult,” Merriman said. “It makes your knee feel very unstable. It’s something that I’ve been trying to deal with, hoping it would get better by now.”
Merriman has been advised to have surgery by at least one of the various doctors he has seen. At issue is the extent of the surgery, since it will impact his availability in 2008. He wants to make a decision soon.
“I’ll try to do it as fast as possible so we can make this less of a distraction,” Merriman said. “My thing is just to keep preparing and get ready for opening week.”
As more information becomes available, however, it appears that Merriman won’t be able to continue to play without some type of surgical correction.
“Every day it just didn’t feel right or it would feel worse,” Merriman said. “One day it would feel like it got a little better and I’d go back out there and it’s still sore. That’s one of the things I’ve dealt with.”
Meanwhile, we continue to hear whispers that the team is bracing for the worst-case scenario — a conclusion that Merriman is experiencing bone-on-bone contact in his knee, and that he’ll possibly need microfrature surgery aimed at creating scar tissue that simulates missing cartilage.

tough night for NFC East D linemen...
Redskins' Taylor leaves game with sprained right knee
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Washington Redskins defensive end Jason Taylor left Saturday's game against Carolina with a sprained right knee.
The six-time Pro Bowl pick, acquired in a trade with Miami last month, was hurt when his leg bent awkwardly after he ended up in the middle of the pile following DeAngelo Williams' 5-yard run.
Taylor immediately screamed in pain and was attended to for several minutes on the field. He walked off the field on his own, but put little pressure on his right leg.
A team spokesman said Taylor would not return.
Taylor, who has started 130 consecutive regular-season games, spent the previous 11 seasons in Miami. But he angered the Dolphins for appearing on the television show "Dancing With the Stars" rather than working out with the team this offseason and was later dealt to the Redskins for two draft picks.
Giants' Umenyiora carted off field with injured left knee
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora hurt his left knee and was carted off the field in the second quarter of the New York Giants' annual preseason game against the New York Jets on Saturday night.
Umenyiora was getting an X-ray and the extent of the injury was not immediately known.
The 26-year-old, six-year veteran could not put any weight on his leg. He was helped off the field with his arms wrapped around the shoulders of two trainers.
The injury happened with 10:48 left in the quarter on an incomplete pass by Brett Favre on third down.
Umenyiora started all 16 games last season and had 52 tackles and a team-high 13 sacks in earning his second Pro Bowl appearance. He added seven tackles in the Giants' run to the Super Bowl.
The Giants are a bit thin at defensive end this season with the retirement of seven-time Pro Bowler Michael Strahan. Justin Tuck has replaced Strahan. New York also signed veteran Renaldo Wynn in the offseason.
If Umenyiora was sidelined for any considerable time, the Giants could move strongside linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end. He was switched to linebacker last year so the team could put its best 11 players on the field.

GIANTS CONFIRM THAT OSI IS DONE FOR THE YEAR
Posted by Mike Florio on August 24, 2008, 5:44 p.m. EDT
The New York Giants have confirmed the worst news their defense could have gotten during the 2008 preseason — Osi Umenyiora, a sack specialist who was poised to carry the load in the wake of the retirement of Michael Strahan, has been lost for the season.
Contrary to reports of a torn MCL, the team says that Umenyiora has a torn lateral meniscus.
He’ll have surgery on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports that coach Tom Coughlin said the subject of luring Michael Strahan out of retirement was raised in the team’s offices on Sunday.
“I haven’t really talked to anyone at this point in time to be honest with you,” Coughlin added. “I’m sure that Jerry Reese and I and ownership will look long and hard at whatever options there are out there and do what’s best at this point in time.”
Strahan wanted $8 million to stay with the team; his price tag might have gone up considerably today.
