I hope everyone who sees Zac Brown Band in concert enjoys them as much as I did tonight. We went to Dell Dismond in Round Rock, Tx and it was a great show. I'm just amazed at the lighting and showmanship.
They had a huge stage and had stage level chairs at tables set up on each side of the stage for the meet and greet before the show. I think it cost about $250. Every so often the band would go down a walkway and perform in front of the special seating area.
They also had a second stage in the middle of the field and did a couple of songs out there. It was so high up...couldn't help but think about Jommy's fall.
The GA folks stood out in front of the stage and the other reserved seats were in the baseball stands.
Here's a roughly done setlist.

Brain Balance--I was not familiar with this, but found on Zac's website.
"Don't let his looks fool you. Brown is a serious dude. Take his involvement with the Brain Balance centers that use physical therapy and nutrition to treat children with autism and ADHD. Brown is helping to build a camp in Georgia for children with severe disorders.". http://triblocal.com/lincolnshire/commu ... ial-needs/

And I thought for a while and figured out who Mishka IS! I remembered Jen's SGH's post about Young Mr Moon and put two and two together with one beanie boy and the other.
I obviously need to buy Talk About...Mishka's newest album. I understand he is recording more with Willie Nelson too.
This is Homegrown with Willie from Talk About album:
(don't do spliffs but I do like our own homegrown)

So just after catching ZBB a few weeks ago in Winston Salem, it was announced he would play Merlefest in Wilkesboro, NC (about 1 1/2 hours from my house). He played last year and they added him to the schedule again this year. He played last night at 10pm following Randy Travis. For those of you not familar with Merlefest - it is a bluegrass/country music festical started by Doc Watson in memory of his son Merle. It's in it's 25th year ( I think) and has attracted big names in all generes of music. Robert Plant is playing there on Saturday night. I grew up in NC but have never been. Jay and I decided to go at the last minute and bought one day passes for Thursday for $35. Jay had been to Bonnaroo before but I had NO idea about what to expect out of Merlefest.
The festival is held on the campus of Wilkes community college which is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The air was slightly cool (almost like a fall day) when we arrived. We parked about 1 mile away from the college and were shuttled in on boys scout buses. The festival itself was alive with local arts and crafts. Music and food filled the air. The only thing we soon realized was that we did not bring chairs (we thought they were not allowed). We found a spot on the lawn and settled in for a night of music. The Doc Watson stage is an amphitheater cut out of the side of a hill on the college campus. It's a beautiful setting with trees surrounding you and the acoustics were amazing. A few blue grass band led up to Randy Travis ( who I had never really liked). Randy was a good performer and his voice still was really good after all these years. He seemed so humble and after seeing him (while I would probably never go see ONLy him) I would recommend him to folks who like his music.
Following Randy was a sweet Bluegrass band named the Wailin' Jennys (who played while ZBB was setting up. They were really good and fit the atmosphere perfectly. ZBB started at a little past 10pm and came roaring on to the stage with "Whiskey's Gone". The crowd (as mellow as they all were) came alive and were on their feet. From that point I could not tell you exactly what he played what. He did play a significantly shorter show than when I saw in WS a few weeks ago 1 3/4 hours as opposed to 3 hours. He played most of the "hits" and what the crowd expected but played his new song "Sweet Addie?" as well as "Martin" and "Oh My Sweet Carolina". The crowd on the "lawn" stayed mostly sitting except a small group of us. I could see a few people near the stage dancing and singing. Although the crowd did come alive during Devil went Down to Georgia. During "Highway 20 Ride" an older gentleman came out on the stage and tapped Zac on the shoulder. Zac looked very surprised and said "Hey Y'all this is my dad!"
During the show Zac talked about that he had attended Merlefest for the past 20 years and sat out on the lawn that we were on as he learned from all the "greats" that came before him. The festival obviously means a great deal to him and he is clealry close with the Watson family. I have a "feeling" that he will play the festival for years to come.
The only nightmare was getting OUT! Imagine thousands of people trying to get on the shuttles back to their cars at the same time. Walking was really not an option because you are basically in the mountains on very dark roads. The hereded like cattle through these (literally fences) to the correct shuttles. It took us over an hour to get a shuttle back to the car. I arrived home exhausted at 3am this morning but knowing I had seen something very special.

The debate is over WHERE to see him. My boyfriend Jay, now loves, ZBB too. I hated that I couldn't go to Merlefest for more than one day. Zac talked about being around the next day to catch some of the music...

Thanks for the review, Shannon! I'm already a huge ZBB fan. I just heard about MerleFest earlier this year, though. What an event!
