Stump the El Bando.....

Post by Bfan53 »

Listened to this week's concert replay on RM from Michigan in 1997. The segment called "Stump the El Bando" from this particular show was a scream.......

For newbie PH this was where concert goers were brought on stage during the show with a chance to toss out a Buffett song to JB to see if he could remember the words. If he couldn't remember your name went in a drawing for the Grand Prize at the end of the tour, which in 1997 was a Key West vacation for 2 on New Year's Eve! Not bad..... [smilie=coolup.gif]

I miss those earlier concerts. Less polished, yes, but good times (like the numerous Walter Cronkite videos) nevertheless..... :pirate: :D

Fingers Taylor played the part of Juan (can't remember the last name used) and introduced the audience members who were chosen to come on stage and try to stump Jimmy. Funny stuff......

Anyone know what tour year "Stump the El Bando" stopped being a regular part of the show?

Right now I'm listening to my C.D. of the 1997 Las Vegas concert, which I was at.
The two contestants tried to stump Jimmy with "Happiness Alone" (which he didn't know) and "Turnabout", which he did know. But he gave the lady who tried to stump him with "Turnabout" the trip to Key West anyway.
He also autographed a box set for each of the two contestants.
It was a very nice concert, in which Peter Mayer did an EXCELLENT rendition of "Guantanemera."

Juan Guano

If I'm not mistaken he didn't do Stumpo El Bando at Jones Beach because it was raining. That was 3 years before I started traveling to shows so I never got to see it.

I woulda shat my pants to hear him sing Turnabout!!!!!!! One of my all time favorites, and certainly one I have resigned myself to never hear live. :(

the setlists for that tour were terrific!! he needs to go back to doing more shows like that when there were WAY less covers and more jimmy buffett songs!!! whenever your playing cuban crime of passion and cousin in miami to kick off a show and then do a stump the band in the middle its just hard to compare!!!

Ahh... the 97 tour! That was a great summer, and the year of my first Buffett concert. Friends that went with me during that year still mention Stumpo el Bando!

When the pharms and flipflopgirl were in NYC Wednesday, I met them for Happy Hour and then dinner. We went to the Hawaiian Tropic Zone for Happy Hour. They're having a contest, co-sponsored with something called Beach Bum Tanning Salon, to find a spokesmodel. It was the 4th of 5 preliminary contests. She was contestant #7 and was one of the 4 finalists. We didn't stay so I don't know if she won.
