That was my thought.
In my mind, I'm kind of thinking somewhere like Cape May, NJ. Which places would you say have more & less to do than a place like Cape May? Anything more tranquil than that might be too relaxing for us. A place with a good balance between things to do and tourists is what I'd like. I don't want it to be overcrowded but I don't want somewhere with nothing to do (walk to). Crowded and touristy isn't necessarily bad. There's probably a reason why so many tourists go to those places.
The beaches are nicer where? In the southern part of the cape?

MacPhin wrote:Don't and I repeat don't, stay in Hyannis. the cape is in my heritage and i would never recommend anyone to stay there. it's too busy and commerical.in my opinion you won't get the flavor of "the real cape cod"
we are in e. orleans and it only take us 20-25 minutes to get to the ferry for nantucket or martha's vineyard. it's 30 minutes to p-town and 40 minutes to the bridge to the mainland. chatham is where i spent most of my childhood summers. it's not like it used to be. it's pretty expensive and has gotten a bit snobby but i still love going there to walk around, have some food and shop.
you should definitely do all the things that jon (DP66) listed off.
I'm not sure if you'll be able to find anything for the low $100/night on the cape. i'll do some searching for you.
Hyannis is a sh*thole. I agree.

Anybody have an opinion on South Yarmouth? That's looking like our lead candidate right now.

South Yarmouth is fine and dandy. Quiet and serene. If that is what you are looking for go past the elbow (Chatham) and hit Eastham, Wellfleet, or Truro . . . thats where the cool 100 foot tall dunes are with random bars with live music at night are with no other commercial development so there are lots of stars and no traffic . . .

yarmouth is great if you like traffic, mini golf, icecream and lame beaches, sorry
agree with all, hyannis too busy, crappy beaches, traffic etc.. though the melody tent may have a decent act playing head further out, to eastham/orleans go to both bay and ocean beaches for a change

General rule . . . the further out the better you are.
Me? I would go get a place in Wellfleet and just go to Cahoon Hallow and the Beach Comber every night . . .
doesn't get any better . . . great live music (John Brown's Body next weekend!) and the best oysters on the cape . . .

I have a friend who stays in Truro and loves it because of what you say. No "commercialism" at that part of the Cape.

Yeah, past the elbow of Chatham and really after that once you pass the National Seashore and hit Wellfleet there are few traffic lights and tourist traps. Just little dive bars and miles of some of the most beautiful beaches in the world with sand dunes that go on equally as far. It doesn't even feel like you are in Massachusetts out there.

I was thinking of taking a weekend to go to Wellfleet, just to relax.

Oh sure. They are nice in a frat house sort of way. But they are on top of some of the tallest dunes on the Cape and right next to the best bar on a road with no other commercial development. I mean, what else would you want?

Wow small world. What do you think of what they did with the outer bar and grill? We were fortunate enough to get married there just after they finished it.

Was at the Beachcomber -
www.thebeachcomber.com - to see John Brown's Body last night. What a great Reggae Band!
The Travel Channel was there filmg. Apparently Cahoon Hallow Beach and the Beachcomber bar made the list of the "Top 25 Sexiest Beaches" (didn't say if it was in the United States or worldwide).
Not sure what a "sexy" beach is but the 3/4 naked girls there to check out the show were pretty d*mn hot.
