Amelia Earhart

Post by OceanCityGirl »

I'm doing a jigsaw puzzle right now on her final flight. Lots of little pieces of info and pics of other era pilots in it. Any thoughts on what happened. It's always been something I've been fascinated with.

I always like reading or watching about these unsolved mysteries. Isn't the conventional wisdom that she got off course and ran out of fuel looking for the island where she was to land? I'll bet a lot of people have spent a lot of time looking for her plane, but that's a damn big ocean. If it's found, it'll probably be by accident.

Technology has improved dramatically. The same equipment they are using to find deep ocean sunk ships could be applied here so it could happen. There are other thoughts too such as capture by military enemies.

So he wouldn't stop for directions, and she crashed because that needle thingy on the dial was pointed at "E" and she didn't know what it meant?

Geez, we solved that mystery in under an hour.

Hasn't there also been speculation that she was sabotaged by the U.S. as well? :-? I'm not sure we'll ever solve this mystery.

As an aside, I found a great book at the used bookstore a few years ago...a mystery based on Amelia Earhart. It's called Flying Blind and it's worth the read if you can find it.

Hmmm, reading up on her tonight...

Now filming, Amelia, starring Hilary Swank. 2009 release. With Ewan McGregor and Richard Gere. The real-life story is interesting enough, hope they don't take too much dramatic license.

Does the jigsaw puzzle have a few pieces missing where she was last heard from and/or mysteriously disappeared?

I don't believe any of those conspiracy theory things. I'm thinking it was a simple miscalculation of fuel usage due to unexpected head winds. She probably ran out of fuel and had to land. Probably a water landing and the plane is laying at the bottom of the ocean yet to be discovered. Engine failure or depending on her altitude and location, a prop strike is also a possibility.

**** Self-Pimping Alert ****

The big guy's albatross flew around the world in 1997 following the path of Amelia Earhart's flight. He produced a TV show in association with the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum that aired on PBS about her flight. I recommend getting a copy. It's called

The Final Hours - Amelia Earhart's Last Flight

you can get it at amazon.com

in a nutshell... flew off course, ran out of fuel, no land underneath plane, rest is history.

I'd feel bad for you, but I have no soul.....

Sigh....the albatross....I miss it.... :(

Thanks for that head's up, Charlie....I'm off to Amazon. Why didn't you tell me about this sooner? I *think* I saw parts of that show, but definitely not in its entirety.
