Garlic

Post by SMLCHNG »

Ok, so I've been stuck on the couch for a week and have watched a lot of cooking shows. :o

All the chef's and cooks I have watched chop up their garlic with big ole knives and I wonder why they work so hard when there are such great garlic presses out there. :)

Which do you prefer using with fresh garlic cloves?

I like the garlic press but hate cleaning it, so I smash the clove and chop.

Depends on the recipe. Using a press is gonna give you a really different flavor than if you chop it. So, you may not want to overwhelm the other ingredients in the recipe with garlic.

We cook with garlic a LOT
used to cut up the cloves, but it is too time consuming.

I buy Badia minced garlic(in olive oil) in the 32 oz container, and it is usually gone in about a month

I use a knife.....Just how I have always done it. It's way more time consuming, but I don't really care.....

One of my friends swears by garlic for medicinal , specifically healing properties....She swallows raw garlic every day and said it cured her Carpal Tunnel of her right wrist....She got all her information from a woman that is a herbalist....

Remind me to ask her if it makes you smell like garlic, eating that much every day....

Chopped.........the more the better........ 8)
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Pinot Noir in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO"

See the one I have pictured above? It's soooo easy! :) Put cloves in, smush the handles together, reverse, and the excess is cleaned out and just run under water. :D

I had one of those once. It didn't push out all the garlic stringies for me. I also wasn't a fan of the way that one crushed. The presses that have a hinged head seem to crush better, at least for me.

Lots of garlic used at the Mottola-Buffett household. Like someone said, chopped garlic vs. pressed garlic depends on the recipe. I personally love to use the garlic press.

I use the garlic press, I'm afraid I'd cut my fingers if I had to do it with a knife, mines not hard to clean at all, BUT......... I always have the jarred garlic in the fridge just in case I run out of fresh garlic and need some [smilie=battingeyes.gif]

I think our garlic press is an antique by now. One of the first things Mrs. TR bought from Pampered Chef when that was popular. We chop and smash it too. Still scares me when she lays out a clove and takes that monster size chefs knife or cleaver, lays it on the clove and gives it a whack :o

Does anybody grow thier own garlic?

Any tips? Does it work well in containers? Will the deer leave it alone?

I have garlic gown in containers, un-intentionally.

I've never had deer bother it, and there were plenty of them around. They enjoyed the corn, and my hostas. They've eaten okra in August.

So that doesn't mean they wouldn't eat garlic.

Perhaps it was more that I provided them with other things they preferred over the garlic.

and you use the bottom, the part in the ground. Not the top.

Yes, I've been questioned as to whether you use the top part, or if there is something in the ground.
