The Old Port is a neat place. Make sure to get to
Gritty McDuffs, try the Gritty Chips and
Three Dollar Deweys. If you have a car its a short easy drive up to Freeport and the outlets and LL BEAN. I second the Sea Dogs.

There used to be a good place in South Portland to eat Maine lobster and seafood called Capt. Newick's....check the phone book and see if it's still around.
Still here?

Have you left for your trip yet?

I have always wanted to visit Portland!
You should buy or pick up FUGITIVES AND REFUGEES by Chuck "Fight Club" Palahniuk.
This is a Frommer's Guide on CRACK! It's all about Portland, but it offers insight into the kookiest things and places that Portland has to offer.
Saw your posting of PORTLAND and this book instantly came to mind. A friend of mine out of state has it. Otherwise, I would have sent it to you!

Third the suggestion.
Also, the town just south of Freeport is Yarmouth, and they have a clam festival around this time of year. And if there's one thing that Maine does well, it's shellfish.
