Statues Of Liberty On Parade

Post by LIPH »

If anyone is interested, Major League Baseball is doing a promotion where they have 8 1/2 foot scale models of the Statue Of Liberty all over New York City, there are 42 of them. There's one for each of the 30 teams except the Dodgers (one for Brooklyn and one for LA), the Giants (one for NY and one for SF) and the Yankees (they have 2), one for each league, one for Yankee Stadium, one for Shea Stadium and 4 for the All-Star Game. I know that only adds up to 41, the last one is listed as the "Stephen Holland Statue" and I haven't seen that one so I don't know what it is. I have 36 of them, the only teams I'm missing are the Blue Jays and Reds. They weren't close to any others so I didn't go see them.

The first picture is an American flag made from red, white and blue Yankees caps.

The Cubs statue has ivy leaves painted on the right arm.

The Diamondbacks statue is inside the ESPN Zone Restaurant in Times Square.

The NY Giants statue is inside Toys 'R Us.

The Mariners statue is inside the Nintendo store in Rockefeller Center.

The Marlins and Royals statues are directly across the street from each other but the Royals statue is in a better location.

The Padres statue is in front of a Petco store. They play in Petco Park, don't they?

In the second picture of the Pirates statue you can see a brown brick building across the street. That's Carnegie Hall. I didn't get a picture, but if you turn left and walk down the block from the Pirates statue you'll be at the only Hooters in Manhattan.

The Rangers statue, not the Yankees, is in front of Mickey Mantle's restaurant. I don't know why.

The White Sox statue is the only one I saw with any graffitti, someone wrote Sox S u c k on it.

The All-Star Game statues are numbered 1, 2, 4 and 5. There isn't a number 3.

The Shea Stadium statue is outside the SNY studios. That's Sportsnet New York, the Mets' cable channel.

My feet and legs hurt from walking all over Manhattan the last 2 days.

I tried to put the pictures in alphabetical order by team name, not the cities where they play. I think I got it right.

Thanks Larry! I walk past the one at the Garden everyday and saw the Phillies one close by (around the Garden general area) but that's it.

Thanks for sharing. Do you know where these are headed after their stint in the city.....are they going to be shipped to their fields, perhaps?

I think they're going to be auctioned off to raise money for charity.

Those are pretty neat. In 2003 Chicago had Team Bobbleheads, and Houston had team boots when they hosted the game. My kids had a lot of fun trying to track them all down.

Wow! Thanks for sharing, Larry! Great pictures.

Your question about the Texas Rangers statue .... The Mickey Mantle Foundation was located on Central Expressway in Dallas (not sure it is still active). Not sure if this is the answer, but maybe?

I found this note from Mickey Mantle on the foundation's website:

"The best gift I ever got was on June 8, 1995 when an organ donor gave me and five other patients at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas the organs we needed to live. I guess you could say I got another time at bat.

Now I want to give something back. I can do that first by telling kids and parents to take care of their bodies. Don't drink or do drugs. Your health is the main thing you've got, so don't blow it.

Second, think hard about being an organ and tissue donor if the time ever comes. Sign this card, carry it with you, and let your family know how you feel.

Thanks for your prayers and kindness. I'll never be able to make up all I owe God and the American people. But if you will join me in supporting the cause of organ and tissue donation, it would be a great start.

Very cool pics...

You really should've gone to Hooters and had the girls pose like the Statue of Liberty. :)

Why didn't I think of that? We had some rain Saturday afternoon while I was on my quest - Hooters girls, white tank tops, rain. Nice combo.

Those are really cool Larry, thanks for putting them up. :D
(O, and Mickey Mantle is buried in Dallas...maybe that's why the Rangers one is in front of his place?)
