Great Job!!!! Any many reasons to be proud!!!!
I've seen your force featured. That is a tough place to work. Some guards are more like police men, others seem to have very advanced medical training. They also allow alcohol on the beach which changes things a bit too. But I know your kids will love it. As you can see my son loves his job. Here we have an intensive try out period with timed races and rescues. Women and men test side by side and there is no separate test or allowance for women. If you see a female guard here she definitely earned it and works her butt off. I go to some lifeguard races here every year. It is amazing the camaraderie that develops. There are men and women in their 80's who were involved in the program when they were young who still come out to the races and attend all of the alumni functions.Salukulady wrote:My kids are all Junior Lifeguards. http://www.juniorguard.com/ We have an incredible program here in Huntington Beach with over 1100 9-17 year olds. My sixteen year old, who has been in the program for 6 years, just made it to the Captain level this summer which will make her eligible for hiring next spring, (and she's a red head, too!). Since being involved in the program, I have huge respect for lifeguards.
I will show your article to my kids when they get home today. I can't imagine how proud you must be of your son. What a wonderful young man he is. This event will change his life forever.
If anyone caught Ocean Force last season on Tru TV, those were our Guards featured. Tru TV is currently filming our Guards again for this next season.
Not that there's anything wrong with thatOceanCityGirl wrote:I kinda was concerned that he'd end up a beach bum surfer for a long time, working in a surf shop to get just enough money to fund the next trip and living on ramen.
I agree, i've been CPR Certified every year since leaving high school. Had it in the Navy and here at work. At work we do it thru the Red Cross. The certifications are longer then a year now so I don't actually take the class every year like I used to.OceanCityGirl wrote:The one thing I've learned is we should all learn cpr. I'm checking for the next class our town has and signing myself and mroc up.
No we're not allowed to drink on the beach. No alcohol on our city or state beach, here. That was one of the funniest episode last year. A guy from Florida was at our city beach, sitting on a cooler full of beer, drinking it. The Life Guard informed him that it was illegal to consume it on the beach. He argued it was legal in Florida and continued drinking. Eventually they made him empty a whole cooler full of beers out on the sand and leave. He said, "Now that's alcohol abuse!"OceanCityGirl wrote: I've seen your force featured. That is a tough place to work.
