Actually, it doesn't say it was empty, it just says they weren't on it. Maybe they have airplane valet service where he went for lunch?

In January of 1996 his Grumman HU-16 airplane nicknamed "Hemisphere Dancer" was shot at by Jamaican police who believed the craft to be smuggling marijuana. The aircraft sustained minimal damage. On board the plane with Buffett were U2's Bono, and Island Records producer Chris Blackwell. The Jamaican government acknowledged the mistake and apologized to Buffett who penned the song "Jamaica Mistaica" for his Banana Wind album based on the experience.

I swear I had heard him say he was not actually on the plane. (ast a concert or interview). I believe he was not, and it has become an urban legend that he was.

I have always found this story to be great. To less likely guys to be in a plane together. Bono and JB. Somehow, Chris Blackwell has to be a link there. U2 was on Island for a long time. Jimmy with his love of reggae and the islands, probablly knows Chris. Hell, he knows everyone else.

Funny thing is Bono, who is never at a loss for words, never said anything about it.

Yes all three have a connection, and could have all been on the plane. But the way I heard it was that Bono and Chris were on Jimmys' plane, but Jimmy was not on it himself. Then the song came about and it rolled from there. all the articles you get now are cut and paste jobs. I would like to find one from when it actually occured.
Hell I am probably wrong, but for some reason I remember Jimmy saying it was his plane but he was not on it (from back around that time, maybe it was at the Gorge in '96)

From what I've read - and not Wikistoopia - in various books, magazines and websites is Jimmy, Bono and Chris were not on the plane.

What gets me is they shot at the thing...with little machine guns...as if they were going to stop the plane. The dudes shooting at the plane were obviously high.

Jimmy likes to tell stories. Some of them are not true. But a lot of people believe everything he says to be true. So there is reason for confusion. Therefor:

Well, what I said just shows how blind Parrotheads are and or can be - they'll believe anything Jimmy says. And you just showed it.

Just because someone says something different doesn't equate to it being without logic. And what I said, it's totally logical. Because I'm not supporting the myth - there are other posts on this thread that say exactly what I'm saying only in a different way.

Bono, along with Island Records producer Chris Blackwell, were flying in Jimmy Buffett's plane when the infamous Jamaica Mistaica incident occurred. Jamaican authorities believed the Grumman HU-16 Albatross was being used as a ganja plane to smuggle drugs and opened fire while all three were inside. No one was hurt.

Jimmy Buffett says he forgives Jamaican police for shooting at a boat carrying him and U2 rocker Bono in the sea off this Caribbean nation, apparently mistaking them for drug traffickers. Bullets struck a seaplane the musicians had just disembarked from and waters around the aircraft and boat, but no one was hurt in Tuesday's incident.

Buffett, Bono and his wife and two small children, and the dog of Jamaican record mogul Chris Blackwell were in the boat when police opened fire, Blackwell said. The group had landed in Buffett's seaplane and was boating in to shore. Blackwell is the CEO of Island Records and has partnerships in several real estate ventures in South Beach, including the Marlin Hotel. Police in Kingston, Jamaica, apologized Wednesday for shooting at Jimmy Buffett's seaplane as it landed off the coast. The pilot was the only one on board and was not hurt by the two shots that struck the aircraft Tuesday. A tip led police to believe the plane was involved in drug trafficking, Commissioner Col. Trevor MacMillan said. ``Thank God no one was hurt,'' he said.
