Bringing virgins to Newport?
I am trying to decide if the Newport Folk Festival is a good concert to bring some friends who are Buffett virgins. Only because Jimmy has said that it will not be the normal full parrothead show. Any ideas?
Both shows at Greatwoods in June
Seattle and Vegas in October
Girlfriend doesn't realize that shes going to be a parrothead by the end of this summer whether she likes it or not.

I'd absolutely take them to Great Woods instead. The folk festival will be a very different animal. They'll be none of the usual PH stuff going on. The venue is flat, not bowl shaped, so you're going to be able to hear well, but not see too well. The set list may be strange. The folk fest is for the people who want to go for the music and visiting with friends (as well as hearing other awesome music all day!).
If you want a great musical event, bring them to Newport. If you want to introduce them to the whole PH experience, Newport isn't the place to do it, IMHO.

I'd first take your friends to the full-blown Parrothead experience which is Jimmy with his Coral Reefer Band. IOW, take them first to a venue like Great Woods or Jones Beach.
As the Newport show is primarily folk and acoustic music , methinks Jimmy is going to go back to his roots when he was just starting out playing in clubs. My guess is he might even go back to albums like High Cumberland Jubilee or Down to Earth for his repetoire.
Then again, who knows? Jake Shimabukuro will also be at Newport the same day as well as Gillian Welch (who co-wrote "Elvis Presley Blues"). So there's no telling what kind of surprises are in store for those of us going (like me).
