The S2 had a batch that got bad CCD sensors. They would absorb water or something, and just go dark. Happened to mine right before last Christmas. I replaced it with the S5 since we loved the S2.Brown Eyed Girl wrote:I had the 2 as well...wish I knew why it up and died.I wanted to give it to my nephew but it isn't worth the money it will take for the camera store to even take a look at it. I'm wondering if there is some sort of internal battery that went bad, since it just went dark. Who knows.

I think we actually went through two Canons (I don't know if it's an S2 from an XYZ). Just totally went dark after about 6 months. Had to replace it two Christmasses ago on Christmas Eve. Since then, though, no troubles.SharkOnLand wrote:The S2 had a batch that got bad CCD sensors. They would absorb water or something, and just go dark. Happened to mine right before last Christmas. Hmmm...sounds like it could be the issue. Never got it wet per se, but out on those foggy winter mornings at the preserve it could have absorbed the moisture. Thanks for that info, guess I can safely toss it now, after I take out that SD card. I considered the S5 but decided to go the dslr route instead. Now i need someone to teach me about teleconverters, because even with my 300mm lens I just can't get the distance I need. The 500mm is just too heavy for me.SharkOnLand wrote:The S2 had a batch that got bad CCD sensors. They would absorb water or something, and just go dark. Happened to mine right before last Christmas. Yeah, they didn't have to get wet, or even be in a "moist" area. They would just absorb humidity from the air. The humidity here is like in the 20% range most of the time, and mine still tanked.Brown Eyed Girl wrote:Hmmm...sounds like it could be the issue. I've only had 2 digital cameras my whole life and they have both been Canons. The original was an A series which used AA batters. That lasted like 10 Jimmy shows. It kept on trucking even though the lens cover would stick because so much alcohol had been spilled on it. My current one is the Sd750 I think it's called and I'm rather pleased. Like a prior parrothead posted, the key is to prefocus to get quick pictures! That can be tough when you've had a smidgen too much to drink though.

Jeezzzz.....
I've always had Olympus' digitals......currently I have a 4040Z and an 8080Z wide (both have been long discontinued). Wifey-poo has a Panasonic which is small, fast and has a jitter free feature (and takes really great "point-n-shoot pictures).....I bought both of the girls HP cameras for Christmas this last year.....great cameras.....Fast, small (not as small as the Panasonic) and tough....
For waterproof digitals.....olympus has a couple of models though I have not heard good things about them, I have used a Pentax Optio W10....great pics and waterproof to 15'......for serious U/W I have underwater housings for the 4040 and the 8080....great thing about the japanese cameras is that most of them have optional U/W housings avalible.....

Wow, I'd say they had a bad batch, apparently all of us here bought from it.RinglingRingling wrote:ahhhh.. so that is what was happening with mine..SharkOnLand wrote:The S2 had a batch that got bad CCD sensors. Ours got spotty. Turning it on and off helped for a while. But eventually it would be dark everytime we turned it on, and we searched online and found out about the problem.RinglingRingling wrote:ahhhh.. so that is what was happening with mine..SharkOnLand wrote:The S2 had a batch that got bad CCD sensors. Canon will fix them, I think the quote I got was like $160 or so, I figured for that amount, I'd just get a new one.
My wife was hacked off because it went out 2 weeks before Christmas, and she's big on picture taking. I ordered her the S5 and had it under the tree.

It affected other digital cameras as well, that used the same CCD, but Canon was the biggest buyer of them or something, so it's quite a bit more widespread with the Canons. And as far as I can tell, those CCDs are not made anymore so there shouldn't be issues with the new S# models.Brown Eyed Girl wrote:Wow, I'd say they had a bad batch, apparently all of us here bought from it.RinglingRingling wrote:ahhhh.. so that is what was happening with mine..SharkOnLand wrote:The S2 had a batch that got bad CCD sensors. This is why all my new equipment is insured...I can basically run it over with a freight train and they'll replace it...as long as I tell them, "I dropped it!"SharkOnLand wrote:It affected other digital cameras as well, that used the same CCD, but Canon was the biggest buyer of them or something, so it's quite a bit more widespread with the Canons. I have both a Sony and a Canon.
Sony Cybershot is very compact...easy to take to concerts but my pictures are never that clear (or maybe I'm not?) at the concerts. Otherwise I like the pictures and the videos are very good. If you get an 8g card, you are set.
The Canon G9 (not sure of the price comparison to the one you mentioned) is absolutely incredible. It shoots pictures like an SLR (which I have a Nikon D80) but much more compact than a large camera. It is harder to take to concerts, though, because it is larger than the Sony, but if you wear a hula skirt...
The pictures on the Canon are much clearer and so is the video.
Never had a Fuji.
You might check your computer, too, and see what kind of card it accepts. It is very handy to be able to pop the card right into your computer. That might help your decision.
Good luck...

No kidding. I have the 70-300 IS...and I've missed plenty of shots simply because I can't hold the camera up any longer, especially when I'm shooting at an up angle.nycfeat wrote:I have a 70-200. That picture is a riot!!
I am amazed at how many folks I see using that 500 as a handheld, including one TINY little asian woman during waterfowl migration last year. No doubt she was a pro. I swear the lens weighed more than she did.
