Recommendation in the Keys

Post by Blind Octopus »

I'm heading to the Keys in October. Am wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a smaller, quaint, quiet place to stay with reasonable rates on Key Largo, Islamorada, or any upper key. I've looked into the Islander but not sure it's what I'm looking for.

if you're looking for a resort, this ain't it....but if you want a basecamp...a quiet place to crash and place to take off and explore from....try the Hungry Pelican in Key Largo....we had their Capt's Quarters....a cabin that slept 6 easily with full kitchen, kitchen, living, dining and bathroom....was about $125/night
We used it on a dive trip, and it worked great for us.

Azul Del Mar is very nice:

I have stayed at the one in Key West and loved it. My parents said at the one in Key Largo and really enjoyed it. :P

I have stayed there before as well..

It was clean small and cheap "The Minnow suite ", But probally the best vacation of my life very simple! $60 a night in DEC.
Had to keep luggage in the car, But just steps to Mrs Mac's Kitchen!

I go to Islamorada every year. We just got back a few weeks ago. We always rent house on the water. I would suggest this. Go to Free Wheeler Realty, and look at their rentals on line. You can get an awesome house for cheaper than staying at one of the hotels. Sherry or Brandy should be able to help you out.

If you are looking for a resort, you can not beat Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key, South Marathon. It is awesome. But, pricey. If you want a true resort, go here. You will love it. It has everything and more. We have stayed a few nights and spent somedays there. My wife is trying to convince me to stay there for our whole vacation next year.

I have stayed at the Islander many times. They renovated it a few years ago. It is a cool little place. However, it is not a resort.

On Islamorada, you also have the Cheeca Lodge. Very nice if you want to stay in Islamorada, but Hawks Cay is better.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any specific questions. I know the area very well.
